is it true that an expecting mother and the unborn child gets affected when exposed to smoke

That's what they say. My husband smokes and I do not. He smoked while I was pregnant, though I think he tried not to smoke around me as much as possible. Still, I was exposed to it occasionally. Me and the baby were perfectly healthy and still are, even though hubby smokes.
