She's only 20 years old and lives in California, married to a Marine and her husband is stationed in Iraq. She works at a bank and a man came up to her and gave her a note to give all of her money and not to scream. She did as she was told and the guy left. I knew this could happen to her and I told her so before moving out there from Virginia for she worked at a bank there as well and she just shrugged it off and said she'd be ok. Now that it actually happens, she's a basket case.... naturally as anybody would be. With the economy being what it is, it's no wonder that crime is on the rise but to have it hit home, it's too much!! So folks, please please please look all around you and know what's there at all times. You could be the next victum if we're not careful!!
Has anybody in your family had this happen to them? I sure hope not!

Hey,I live in Virginia and there's robberies here too.It has nothing to do with her living in California.Yes,the economy is worse in California, then Virginia. But,the economy is bad everywhere. In the county next to me that I used to live in there are more foreclosures than the whole state of California.
Thank God it was the banks money and not hers.At least the banks money is federally secured.Thank God she was not hurt also.

dfollin, I didn't mean to imply that it has everything to do with California.... just that she's from Virginia and moved to California and that she's alone out there with her husband in Iraq. Having no one to turn to to talk it out is really hard. I know because I'm married to a retired army guy.
Anyway, I'm from Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg area! Where are you from? Didn't know there were so many Virginians on here!! I live in North Carolina now but am close to the Virginia border off of 29, just south of Danville.....

Hi, dfollin. I live in Winchester, not too far from you. I've noticed houses for sale all over the place! I know that foreclosures are at an all-time high and I can see people trying hard to avoid them by selling their homes. It's so sad because I know that, if they do manage to find a buyer, they won't get the money they should be getting for their homes. They have to lower the price dramatically to get them sold. It's such a sad state we're in... and I don't mean Virginia.
I am unable to work due to disabilities and my husband lost his job two weeks before Christmas. Although he's working freelance now, the money is just not coming in like it should. We might lose OUR home! He's HORRIBLE with money and won't listen to me so I worry constantly. We just bought this house less than 2 years ago so there's no equity in it. We're between a rock and a hard place right now and it's scary!
But, there just may be a For Sale sign on our house before long, unless the economy picks up again.

Hi gabs! I'm still trying to catch up!! lol I'm so far behind!! And yet I keep making new discussions! Go figure! lol
It did shake her up really good but she's doing better now. She has to seek counseling, the bank is paying for it, before she can return to work which is a good thing. Hugs to you too!

That's true, people are turning to desparate measures to get what they need in order to survive which is so sad because even law abiding citizens are breaking the law to put food on the table. I hope the economy makes a come back and really soon. My niece is doing better now but yeah, she was quite shaken up. She has to seek counseling before returning to work and the bank is paying for it.

Yeah I agree ElicBxn, at least it was the banks money but it scared the hell out of my niece. The funny thing is, she was so aloof about it ever happening to her and she's a bit mouthy at times and overly confident so for this to happen to her brought her down a notch or two which is a good thing. I'm not glad that it happened to her but to see her brought down a notch is, I am glad to see.

Now and days it is really scary. I have not had it happen to me or any one of my immediate family thank God, I have had some of Mylotters friend have it happen to one their love ones or friends, but it is really ridiculous. Like you stated the economy is so bad. Before we would say they need to get out and find a job. Now and days it is so bad people can not even find jobs.
But that is still not an excuse to go and rob people. I'm glad that she was not seriously hurt.

A number of years ago, I had to apply for food stamps and since I also had a job interview later in the day and had to take so much paperwork with me, I took my ex husband's old briefcase with me and went to the welfare office. When I left there, I noticed a big tall black kid following me. He was probably around 14 or 15 but was much bigger then me. Well I kept switching the briefcase from one hand to the other and as I did, the hand with the briefcase is where the kid would stay behind. I knew he was going to hit but I didn't know when. He probably saw that I was nicely dressed and having a briefcase, he thought I was a caseworker coming out of the welfare building and had a lot of food stamps and money in the briefcase, that is what I figured. Well we were coming up to the library wall and I walked with the briefcase close to the wall and that's when he hit! I WAS READY! He tried to rip the briefcase out of my hand and I let loose with all the karate I ever learned! Being a small woman that I am, he probably didn't know what hit him, the poor thing! I left him crying, bloody, limping, and trying to crawl away, I let him go and didn't even try to hold on to him! Some woman ran up to me and said she saw the whole thing and did I need help? I said, NO, I THINK HE HAD ENOUGH!

My brother was beat up by other teen age trick or treaters and his candy taken, about forty years ago. My first hubby was beat up by fellow sailors in Japan, when they had too much to drink and not enough to do.Also about forty years ago. I do agree, however, that we are hearing about more and more bank crimes. I hope she gets over her fright. She did all she could do.

Hi GG, I'm playing catch up if you can on here!! lol Gee, I'm sooo far behind!! But I'm trying to catch up.... My neice is doing better now. She has to seek counseling which the bank is paying for before she can return to work. That's a good thing for it will help her a great deal.
That's awful about your brother and husband! People can be so incredibly mean! My hubby was beat up really bad by a group of Indians who were drunk. He said they just all of the sudden turned on him and beat him within an inch of his life and ever since he has no use for them. It's sad because it was these idiots who did it, not the race but he's so tramatized over it that he won't see it any other way.

I live next to a busy side street in my city and the convience store across the street from me has been robbed three times lately. Once three guys went in and struck the elderly black man who was working across the head with a club knocking him to the ground. He put up a fight and they left empty handed but he was injured and never came back to work which was a shame because he was very well liked but it wasn't worth his life. Then someone broke in by throwing a brick through the glass door, they ran in grabbed the cash register and ran off. Just two or so days ago they got robbed again by two men who came in armed with shotguns. They got the money and left and an hour later the same pair the police think robbed another store the exact same way. So far this pair they think are responisble for three convience store robberies in the same area. They have not been caught yet. It is going to get worse out there to with the nation having no jobs and people getting desperate to feed and house their families.

Oh the poor old man!! I hope he's better by now. Here he was just trying to make a few bucks the honest way and he gets beat up. How sad. What is this world coming to? Yes we are in desparate times and people are taking drastic measures to feed and house their families and it's sad too. I hope the economy makes a come back and soon. We need some luck on our side now. My niece is doing better now but yeah, she was quite shaken up. She has to seek counseling before returning to work and the bank is paying for it.

I'm so glad she did as she was told. I have a cousin that was killed in 1198 while working at a gas station. The guy came in and demanded him to open the safe and he claimed he didn't have a key (which he really did). He was shot at point blank range and the guy was caught after a couple of weeks and sentenced to life in prison. Sad part is he thought he was doing the right thing by not doing as the robber told him. He had been cautioned a hundred times because he was in a high crime neighborhood. He had been given orders by the company that if robbed give them everythtng it wasn't worth his life. He was only 20 years old. So although I am sure she is quite shaken it could have ended up a lot worse.

It wasn't a case of her trusting the first guy! She worked at a bank, she thought the guy was a customer.

Ohhh that was pretty unfortunate. I have known people who have been robbed before, although none are in my family. One time, one of my friends left their back door slightly ajar, and a thief came in and ran off with a computer and her dad's entire camera set, which cost a LOT of money. Luckily he had insurance and was given another one, but it sure was scary! And then one of my sister's friends had their car stolen at one time.

Yes it is pretty unfortunet but thank God she wasn't hurt. The bank is paying for her counseling before she can return to work which is a good thing for she'll need it. That last time I talked to her she said she was feeling better.
That's awful about your friends and your dad's stuff was stolen! That's terrible! I hope they were able to find the jerks who did it!!

Good thing she was not hurt! And that it was the bank's $$ and not hers. I hope they catch the man that did it. Nobody in my family has been robbed in person, but when we returned home from a vacation many years ago our apartment had been robbed. I give her my support and hope she feels better knowing the situation could've been a lot worse.

Thank God she wasn't hurt is right! It shook her up all but good! She has to seek counseling before she can return to work and the bank pays for it which is a good thing. But now she's feeling better and wants to return to work. If it had've been me, I'd have quit that job here and NOW!

I'm glad to know that your niece wasn't hurt, other than emotionally! I know that working in a bank can be a dangerous place to work, especially when the economy is taking a dump! I believe they are trained in how to handle bank robberies, though.
Yes, it is MUCH different when it hits home. We never really know how we're going to react to anything until it happens to us, even when we're well-trained.
I was once walking to my car after just having a job interview. I was trying to get a full-time job after working part-time because we needed more income. My car was a Geo Prizm so that should tell you that we weren't rich! LOL
A man was walking towards me with his hands in his pockets. Once he got to within 10 feet of me or so, he stopped walking and said, "Give me your money" with his hands still in his pockets.
Instead of being frightened, I burst out laughing! I told him, "I don't have any money!" and kept walking to my car, got in and drove away, while he continued to stare at me like I was looney!
Once I got home, I realized that I could have been killed, right there on the spot! It was probably my reaction that saved me from harm. I'm sure he wasn't expecting me to burst out laughing! People generally avoid those who appear crazy! LOL
But, these days, I am extra careful. Although we're living in a much safer place now, robberies and theft still happen here. I never go out at night alone unless I'm going to or from my son's house and don't stop anywhere in-between. I always shop during the day when there are lots of people around. You just never know.
