Have any of you ever thought of of packing it all up and moving south? That is exactly what my husband I did nearly 6 years ago. We left Delaware and moved to Playa Del Carmen, stayed there until hurricane Wilma hit and then moved to the island of Cozumel, then we took off for the island of San Pedro, Belize. For the past year we have been living in a small town called Chelem on the Gulf of Mexico. It is about 4.5 hours from Cancun and different as nite and day. We have finally found our piece of paradise. We live in a sleepy little fishing village with some of the nicest local people that I have ever meet. Life is simple and easy here (well most of the time) We walk on the beach, eat fresh fruit and seafood, work on our house and sell a little real estate. It is a life beyond anything that I have ever dreamed. If anyone has ever wanted to do something like this and was too scared or wanted someone to ask questions to let me know. I love talking about my new life!

Since visiting Belize I have dreamed a few times about moving there. I met a few American ex-pats and the seemed to be having a lovely time there. I traveled to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala on that trip. I am currently learning Spanish. It think it sounds amazing where you live now and where you have lived. I adore tropical locations with lots of palm trees and white sand beaches.

Belize was beautiful, and full of nice people, however it was just to expensive for my husband and I. As an example, an 1/2 gallon of Breyers ice cream, a year and a half ago was $34 Belize, or $17 USD. Also the crime rate has really risen there, thats why when we decided to buy a house and build a life it was here in the Yucatan.

Does that mean that you are moving to the Yucatan also? It's such a great place! And for all the Americans out there the dollar really stretches here, right now it's 14 to 1. Belize was great to but very expensive, we have a much better quality of life here. Thanks for your response.

That is definitely great to hear. The way you describe the place makes me want to go there. I have always wanted to live in a nice village away from the city life and near the beach. But for the meantime, I have no choice since my work is concentrated in the city area. Perhaps later on, we will be able to find our place.... Best to you and your family.

Bombshell, I see that you live in Germany. We have many friends here that have moved from Germany (Alemenia as they say it in Spanish)for exactly the reasons that you have mentioned. It is always warm here and very inexpensive. Thanks for the response!

That is great, I have always wanted to live in Belize, it seems so nice! I am sick of the winter here in North America, it would be great to be close to the beach and eat fresh fruit everyday. That would definitely be my piece of paradise! The value of my money would also be better so that would be a plus. It must be great to live there, you guys were really brave to take that chance on picking up and leaving, perhaps after college I will do the same someday!

Sounds great! You should post some photos of the area so the rest of myLot can see what it's like there. What are the accommodations like for anyone who might want to take a vacation there?

Hi Canellita, thanks for your response! I do have some pix listed on my blog on my profile. If you send me a pm I can also send a photoshow. It is really great place to live. There are a couple of small hotels here, not 5 star, just clean and nice on the beach. We also rent out some of our clients homes very reasonably. You owe it to yourself to come and visit, most who do never want to go back home.

diansinta, I do find it almost perfect here! But I think that you live somewhere very beautiful too! I have always wanted to go to Bali, but it is a long way and expensive to get there. Why are all the good places such a long flight? Thanks so much for your comment and have a great day!

well my life is exactly opposite to you.. i m a small village guy who moved to big city. i come from farming family and since in our village we dont have any institution for higher learning so i had to move to new Delhi which is like 16 million of population. I am loving every minute of the fast paced life and how people have zeal to live and move forward here and i like crowded places, and everything a big city has

It sounds like the city life suits you. I used to love the city and understand the need to move where there are universities. Enjoy your life in New Delhi, maybe when you are as old as I am you will be ready for life in a small village again . I appreciate your response!

It is actually something my fiancee and I have talked about a lot. We moved south, but not as far south as Mexico yet. Are there any other jobs besides real estate? I would love to do this, and think it would be a great way to raise my kids. Add me as a friend, I would love to hear about your life, and what jobs are available! Then, count us in, and we will be on our way!

Jobs are hard to get here as priority goes to the Mexican people, which is a good thing. However as it is a developing country there are opportunities if you think outside of the box. Some people come here, buy a rundown house, fix it up and flip it. Others work online, some start small businesses. I will add you and we can talk about it more. Thanks for replying!
