I have a lot of faith Obama will do all in his power to improve the Human rights situation, he's already done lots and we don't expect miracles he's not Super Man. Amnesty International are doing a petition to ask him to do more things in his first 100 days to set a good example and really get the ball rolling all over the world. They are asking him to "promptly charge guantanamo detainees with a recognisable offence or release them, and ensure those charged receive fair trials in US Federal courts, and ensure that an independent commission on US “war on terror” abuses is set up."

How do you guys all feel about human rights issues and what do you think Obama needs to do next to improve human rights?
I notice this is the first discussion ever in the human rights interest so it's obviously been a bit neglected as a discussion topic on mylot so far. I've been a member of amnesty International for a few years now and follow the human rights situation around the world quite closely. Is anyone else a member?

First of all, I am really glad to know that you are a member of amnesty International. May I know the procedure of getting their membership?
Secondly, this is a very vital issue, and one must not forget the potential threat that may relate to the fight against terror motion in terms of its impact on human rights issues. We have witnessed violation of human rights in any war so far. So this must be a tough challenge for Obama.
So far as I'm concerned I strongly believe it calls for development of a strong intelligence network to pin-point the particular suspect zone, and all attacks should be focused at the target zone instead of targeting a country as a whole.
Anyway, I'll be observing this discussion for more concrete input from others.

I think he has already said he will close guantanamo bay, one of the things the petition asks is that the inmates get charged or released straight away, and those charged get fair trials. I think you are right too whoever was responsible for people losing their life in Guantanamo bay need to be punished too and I hope they are held accountable.
