Are you afraid of sharks? If so, would you swim in the ocean?

I am absolutely terrified of sharks, to such an extent that the first time I ever swam in an Ocean or Sea was this past summer when I swam in the Mediterranean, but even then was absolutely petrified. Is anyone else with a shark phobia, guilty of the same thing?

I DID watch JAWS one too many times when I was younger. So because of it, I just cannot bring myself to swim in any body of water where there would or could be fish, never mind Sharks. I dunno if I want to call it a fear of sharks. I am just afraid of something pulling me under. I once got tangled in some weeds and it just freaked me right out! Thoughts of JAWS came flooding back.

I am fascinated by sharks actually. I live near the beach. I don't get to go out there as much as I would like, but I usually get in the water when I do. There have been some shark attacks here in the past, and it runs through your mind when you go out there, but I am not going to let it stop me from enjoying the water...

I love the mystery of under the water but I also know I am deathly afraid of things like sharks, barracudas, octypuses, ect. I'd love to be a diver but I'm not the right shape for it and I'd be scared of the sealife.

Yes, I am afraid of sharks as well. I was vacationing at the beach and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean last summer and that's all I could think of. I don't like being in water where it's hard to see in the water. It's hard to tell what may be underneath the surface and that makes it hard to enjoy the water sometimes. I just had to block things like that from entering my mind so I could enjoy my vacation. Now, I used to live in Tampa, Florida and the water is much clearer and easier to enjoy in the Gulf of Mexico. In St. Petersburg and Clearwater, the water is nice and clear and so there was less worry whether there was going to be any big fish, such as a shark coming around.
