I have often heard women speak about having the little black dress as if it is a must have and a defining content of all female wardrobe /closet. It seem to be a dress that is taken out at special times and it is supposed to bring out a certain quality like make them feel sexy and confident. And there is hell to pay if they cant fit into their little black dress. These are my insights on this issue ,I don’t have one and will never have one ,so I am hoping someone will provide insight into the phenomenon which has always amazed me.Another thing I would like for someone to describe for me their idea of the ultimate "little black dress" Men you may also participate in this discussion by saying whether you like to see your woman in her little black dress or it doesn’t matter for you ?

There are lots of reasons why there is a little black dress phenomenom. First off, we pass this from mother to daughter so God knows where it came from in the first place, it just is out there and that is all we know . Black is allways in fashion, it's sexy, it's easy to combine. Black clothing also has a slimming effect, and like mentioned before it can be dressed up or down easily. It's the perfect piece of clothing that goes for every occassion as we like to mix and match a lot of clothing. With 40 different pieces of clothing creating over 250 different outfits is a big challenge, and hell yeah we are up for it! LOL!

Clearly you are a guy, Ronnyb. You have misread what I was trying to point out. Creating 250 outfits with 40 pieces of clothing by mix and matching means having no more than 40 pieces but combining them. For example skirt A can be worn with sweater A and that's one outfit, but if you wear skirt A with sweater B it's another outfit. Mix and match upto 250 options at least . I am not saying we actually have that amount of clothing, though basicly a lot of woman do . And shoes aswell! I guess mystery is also a big part of the little black dress, but there are more outfits that are mysterious and sexy. I am not sure if this is something just about the little black dress?

Wow like I knew about this black dress phenomenon ,but I didnt know it was that entrenched ,passed down from mother to daughter you say. Thanks for the reasons I am just learning from this discussion about the slimming effect.I didnt know about that one ,I thought there was more nystery to it but I am grateful for the clarity.OH and forty pieces of clothing and 250 outfits .....you sure you can still find your little black dress lol..Thanks for your answer

Black Suit - My Little Black suit
You have it right Ronny, the little black dress is the one item a woman can wear and feel sexy. Every woman should have one but guess what, I don't have one.I rather have a knock out black suit, a form fitting black suit. Anyway it is the dress a woman will pull out when she needs to go out.Caution.If your lady and youi have a fight and sge goes upstairs and puts on the little black dress, look out, she is going Out and she will be back Real late.

I sadly dont have a little black dress, but I would love to have one, and perhaps that will be my goal by the end of this year to get one... I had a baby last year and I am currently working on firming back up... LOL, so I have to say if I had one, I wouldnt be wearing it to soon... but yes, it is the idea of the dress, and if you are single that is the dress to be seen in, and if you are married, it is the dress you want to wear again....LOL

I used to have a little black dress, until I "grew" out of it that is, and it was excellent for occassions where I couldn't figure out what to wear. I just threw on my "this is good for anything" dress and went on my merry way.

Hi ronnyb! I do have a few black dresses of different style and cut in my closet and I do admit that I do love wearing them in parties or any social functions or events. I think black dresses are the formal staple item of every woman's closet. The best part of black dresses is that they can be dressed up or down, depending on the elegant event you are attending. Black dresses are also slimming. My favorite black dress is the halter style. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

LOL I don't even own a dress, let alone a little black one. There was a time though when I had the little black mini skirt to go with the black spiked heels. I admit it made me feel sexy and powerful when I wore it. That is when I wasn't falling off of those tall spiked heels. :P These days its all about comfort for me. I dress how I like and don't care about what anyone else thinks. I've often joked with my family - don't ever nominate me for "what not to wear" because I will be the one person who says no way.

Yes, i've heard about it too.. i have dresses but they aren't all in black.. i have yellow, pink and other lively colors.. maybe the reason why they have pointed it out is because it's the safest color to wear in any occasion..i mean, you can pair with glamorous accessories, with colored heels or pumps, etc..

A little black dress describes a dress that a woman will basically look hot in. Black is a sexy colour as it is, and the perfect black, fitted dress will make any lady look, and feel desirable. It's true, nearly every woman does own a 'little black dress' or its equivalent

Oh I didn't know until I read this discussion. I have couple different types of black dress in my closet. I pick them sometimes for some dinners. I think dark color clothes make you look slimmer that's why girls like it?

I think our fashion has changed so much over the years that the old basic "little black dress" has lost its importance. My most important article is a pair of really nice jeans.

You just reminded me of my little black dress. That tells you how long it has been since I've gone anywhere. Yes, I have a little black dress, actually I got it about four two ago, when I was going to an office party where I used to work. I love that dress, I have worn it maybe three times.

The idea of a little black dress is that it goes anywhere, any time, to any occasion. It can be dressed up or down, whatever it needs. If you have a black dress, then you are equipped to do any where. Now days, it's black pants suits. I love black, period! Black also has the tendency to make you look smaller than you really are.

No girl on earth should be without a little black dress tucked away in her closet! What's so special about it? It's hers! That's why! It reminds women of how sexy they are and who doesn't like to feel sexy?

I don't think any women should be with out that "little black dress"... even though it may not always be black... It's something that you can always pull out and be comfortable, and confident in. I like mine because it's something that shows just enough cleavage, and just enough leg to leave my husbands mind wondering what I might have on under it. I pull mine out on those special occasions when we finally get a night out away from the kids, and daily stress of life. Having something that you can put on and it make you feel sexy, and fun, it a must in any women's wardrobe.
