True.Raja Rama Mohan Roy,a great social reformer of India, fought against this superstition and succeeded in getting an act against it. Still in remote places in India stray incidents are taking place. But they are waning.

First of all sati is not part of the religion. It is banned. How did it start? Thousands of year ago Goddess Sati sat on religious fire after being unable to bear the insult of her husband by her father. Hence the term sati. Later there might have been an incident of a devoted wife entering her husbands burning pyre. Over the years idiots started beleving that sati is part of the religion. Whereas religion does not ask or approve of sati. Some idiots also forced the widow into the burning pyre. This was practised only in some parts of India.

I think it is horrible and cruel and I would never do it. I thought that was illegal in India

I would think it a bad idea what if they are young with young kids be hard on the kids to lose both parents at once and to be dragged to do it even worse. Altho I would have liked some times to have followed my hubby . I feel like I wasnt meant to go yet as I have to take care of family business and grand daughter . My kids would have really been devastated!.
