how do you patch up a relationship with your sister that was broken?

i have only one sister. but we aren't close. we are trying to this day. but there was a time, about 7 year ago that i told her, "there are just 2 girls in the family and yet we are not close to each other like other sisters that i know. Why is that?" and she just gave a cry. now that we are grown and i now have a family, my son becomes our common denominator, although i can still feel the loss of a bond between us. i want to be a real sister to her, and enjoy a really strong relationship with her- to be a sister not just in name, but dunno where and how to start. have you, or someone you know, ever gone through a similar situation? how did you deal with it? can you give me an advice?
