It's kind of a cliche but few people can write a convincing crash. So what's a good way to crash on a deserted island - aside from sinking a boat/crashing a plane?

Well, you said "crash on a deserted island." there's only so many ways to crash, I assume you meant to say "stranded on a deserted island"
In which case...
1) Time travel scenarios. If it's really a crash you want, you can have the time travel machine crash on the island :P
2) Amnesia. There may or may not have been a crash involved in the character being stranded there, but you do know that you are there. Whether you resolve how your character got there or leave it hanging is up to you.
3) Lack of fuel+ Blown off course/Pulled off course by currents. The plane/boat is still in working condition, just that you somehow have no fuel and are stranded there.
4) Crash via giant bird/dragon/UFO/dinosaur. since you didn't mention the setting you wanted the crash to be set in, I'll just mention other crashes for fantasy settings.
5) Tornado aka How Dorothy got to Oz. You'll have to come up with some plot device to explain how your character survived the fall though.
6) Via snowsled.
7)Deserted island = giant iceberg
8) Monkey stole your plane/boat keys.

Kidnapping, possibly. You could end up stuck in a coma and you're forever dreaming of being on island. When the space shuttle comes back it could miss target and end up on an island.

Espionage! Conspiracy! Faulty technology in the plane. Um...terrorism scenarios.
There's a ton of ways to crash a plane, heh. ESPECIALLY in fiction.

i once thought about writing a novel of a crash on an island. but didnt do it.
maybe something happened to the engine or ran out of gas or something. and a huge whale bumped into it. and shook the whole ship, knocking some people off. the whale create a small hole on the side of the ship, and it slowly started sink. some people escaped on those small rafts and life jackets. and floated to the nearest land or island. while others went down with the boat.
the survivors eventually get rescued and write a book about it. and hence, they created the reality show, Survivor...

You could be like Jonah and get swallowed by a giant fish and then spit out onto an island.
You could fall overboard and have to swim to the island.
You could be a high altitude parachutist that gets blown off course and lands on an island.
You could be a whaler that goes on a Nantucket sleigh ride.

An astronaut on a mission in space. The rocket crashes on the island.

maybe it's because it always has to be a "crash," and god knows there are only so many ways to do that. :D
if i were to write a story on someone becoming stranded in a deserted island, maybe my character chose to go there for a reason (to look for someone, probably a loved one believed to have been stranded there), then i will build the plot by saying the main character's boat/plane mysteriously disappears. that should open a lot of doors for the story.
hehe. just a thought. :)
