Blank stare?

Ever wonder why we stare blankly at a fire whenever there is one in front of us? The only explanation I ever heard was from a documentary about the evolution of man. And he's talking about it as maybe, so no one's really sure as far as I know. At the end of the documentary he was in front of this bone fire and a silhouette of two early man at the other side of the fire which became more visible as he talked. He said that maybe we stare at the fire because we see it as a window or our connection to the past when early humans have just learned making it and probably stared at it the way that we do. I forgot the title but it was a special from BBC.

I think it is because flickering flames are mesmerizing. If you keep looking at a fire you feel a bit disconnected from reality, and able to let your mind wander. Also I think there is something comforting about them.
