What are the first things you do when you come home from a holiday?

When you return to your house from a vacation (3 days and more), what are the things or tasks you would do? No matter how tired I am, I can't relax or rest - just have to unpack all the bags, take out the dirty clothes and start the washing machine. Then pour out all the water in the jugs or containers and boil fresh water; and make my own cup of coffee! And after all this is attended to, take a good shower and then laze in my own bed - one of the things I miss very much when I leave home! So what do you do when you return home from a holiday?

Hi, our holidays normally involve back-packing and camping! So I have to empty the rucksacks asap. If I don't I know it will probably have just one item in there that will make the rest go mouldy and cause even more work for me. I remove all washing and any cooking utensils for a scrub up before storage and if it rained I normally hang the tent on the line to hose of any mud. I also like to wash sleeping bags before they are stored. Seems like a lot of hastle but it is worth it for cheaper getaways. :)x

Hi, it really sounds like a lot of work, even more than just dumping the dirty clothes into the washing machine! I really admire the energy you still have after coming back from a vacation!

I have recently come from my trip to South Africa. When I got home I enjoyed a relaxing and warm bath. I loved going into my comfortable bed and slept quite soundly. I went shopping to next day to get my food and drinks in that would be suitable for me. After that I got my photos of my trip developed with the speedy one hour service. I was delighted with my photos and went home to put them in an album. I unpacked and put my clothes that I took on my trip for a wash and then to be dried.

Hi, you sound very relaxed after a trip. I must learn to be like that - not rush into unpacking and washing on reaching home! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

It's the exact opposite for me. I usually leave my luggage lying around when I get back home, and just sleep away all the good memories of my holiday in preparation to getting back to work. It will take me a good week or 2 before I start unpacking my stuff.

What about the dirty clothes? Do you leave them there or you have someone taking care of them for you? I can't stand the idea of dirty clothes; so I have to dump them into the washing machine first. Thanks for responding and have a great day!

When I am travel, I will prepare a large bag for the dirty clothing of the last days. Whenever I get home, the first thing is to put all of these dirty stuff into the washing room. Meanwhile, I will sort through the mails to see if i have any bill due. Among other things is the sorting out of gifts for my friends and relatives. So much to do that it take another week or so to really settle down again. And the fun from the travel will last longer until the photos are copied and circulated to share with my friend.

It's more work with kids around - fortunately you have your husband and helper to help you. My husband - if I leave it to him, more likely the unpacking will never be finished. Thanks for responding and have a great day!

First, I unpack all the toiletries I know the family and I'm going to need right off. Then, I start a load of laundry. Usually all the clothes we've brought have to be washed, so I try to get to that right away. Then, I run to the market because we're always in need of at least milk and bread right away.

Right, I forgot about the food - since there are only 2 of us, we would eat out and do our grocery shopping at the same time. Thanks for responding and have a great day!

Like you, I can't relax until the dirty washing has been dealt with. I also like to check on the animals myself, even if I've left someone trustworthy in charge. It's always nice to be home, where ever it is that I've been.

Yup, if only someone could come up with some disposable clothing, which is good and tough, so no more washing worries! Anyway, it's nice to be home again, even though the vacation has been fun!

Hey.....same here same here.....I would also unpack and put all the dirty clothes in the washing machine. Depending on how much clothes there is. Sometimes I have to do two loads. And yes refill all the water containers, mop the floor, take a bath and then go online because I sell stuff online so I definitely gotta check my mails.....I don't really like to leave my home for long period of time...I love my home I love to stay at home.....

I try to make sure that the house smells right. There has been a few times when we came home and I can't quite get settled because the place doesn't smell home-y. I go around the house, walking in as many rooms as I could to disturb the stagnant air :D Thanks for the response on my discussion!

First thing i do is throw all the suitcases or bags on the floor, then open all the windows and let the stale air be out and fresh air inside, then i would change bedsheets of the bed and then sleep for about 4 or 5 hours and only then think what to do or what not to do.. on that day we would usually order our food so it is not a problem.

Hi, wish I could just do that - sleep for 4 or 5 hours, that would be nice! The problem is I would be thinking of the dirty laundry, and won't be able to rest or relax until they are in the washing machine!

The first thing I'd like to do is to have a show and then have a sound sleep! so we have some in common! I have been back from the three-day holiday of QingMing. How wonderful the trip is!

ain't having a holiday means that we should be relaxed? lol! when i get from a holiday from somewhere, the very first thing i do is go dive into my bed and sleep! ironic isn't it? it should not be because we were suppose to be having our r&r. it is more tiring than working on you job!

Hi, you are so right! But I could never be able to do that - dive into bed and rest on reaching home - I'd be thinking about the dirty laundry and the unpacking ! Thanks for responding and have a good day!

If I come back from vacation, I would get a warm bath and get some dinner to eat. About clothing will do later because I am so tired from the trip tho. I will go to my home phone message and mails. Turn on my favorite TV show and enjoy it . Get a good sleep and get up early, start a new day at work

Yup, a warm shower to clean away the dirt of traveling. But I still have to attend to my unpacking - I wish I could relax, like you do! Thanks for sharing!

I would think one of the first things I would do is just sit down and relax a littel bit. A vacation is a very fun thing to do, but it can also be exhausting. Then, after that, I would start unloading the bags...get out the dirty clothes, put away all the bathroom stuff, etc. I gotta get all the stuff put away so they're not littering the house.

Yup, that's what some of the other myLotters were saying - relax! I must try - it's difficult to rest and relax, when I'm thinking about the dirty laundry and the unpacking! Thanks for responding and have a great day!

The first thing that I do after coming from any vacation is get milk and bread. Since the refrigerator is all empty I need to have something to feed the family. So I get the eatables from the market for cooking. Then of course cleaning of the home and dirty clothes.

Ok, I may be the odd one out here, but I do not unpack as soon as I get home. Ugh, who wants to deal with tath after a long travel day. I always make sure I have atleast one more day off from work to take care of that unpleasantness. No, the first thing I do is listen to phone messages and check my mail. Gotta find out what I've missed.

For some reason, whenever I come home from a "holiday", or a trip, or camping.. I must hop in the shower; thoroughly wash my hair with my own shampoo. I don't know if this is OCD or what - but I do it, every time. I usually change into my sweats, pick up the mail (which sometimes we have the post office hold for us, otherwise we have a neighbor or someone close to us pick it up and hold onto it for us), take care of my pets (change the cat litter, feed them, pay attention to them!), and then I pretty much do laundry. Quite domestic.

Yup, I'm with you about this - especially about washing my hair at home. Even though the hotels/hostels provide shampoo, it's nothing like home!
