Have you had mononucleosis?

Any information that you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
I had my 11 year old son in the ER last night with a temp of 102.6. He saw his doctor earlier yesterady, who said that his headaches were probably the result of sinus pressure and gave him a prescription nose spray to alleviate it. Well, later on that night, he had a temp of 99 and I gave him Tylenol. 30 minutes later he was at 102! I couldn't get the doctors on the phone...it was exactly 5pm, so I took him to the ER.
In the ER, a very rude doctor said that he didn't know what else he could do for "the lad", he had a temperature and needed pain relievers. I told him that Kurt had been having some issues, beginning with an ER visit 2 weeks ago with a false positive strep test result. Then there was the adverse reaction to the antibiotic (or what we thought that it was) and sinus headaches.
Again, he said..."well what do you want me to treat him for? What else can I do that his doctor didn't see him for this morning?" At this point, I was absolutely enraged! Keeping my temper I said "I am no doctor, but maybe you could give him a blood test for God's sake, he might have mono!" "So you want me to issue a blood test then?" Oh my goodness! I can't believe that there are people this callous! Yes, "Absolutely, I do!"
Well, it turns out that I was right. He has mononucleosis virus. He has probably been a carrier for over 1 month, and there is no way to pinpoint where he contracted it. According to the doctors, it is contagious if spread by saliva or even blood. Mom and I have been thinking and the only thing that we can come up with is that he got it from the middle school drinking fountains. He doesn't share drinks or food with anyone and is very good about washing his hands!
I asked both of his doctors this evening if he was able to go to school and or participate in other activities. Their answer was "if he felt up to it yes." Their only stipulation was that he couldn't partake in football, basketball or wrestling or any sport where he might be hit. I mentioned karate, and they said everything else was ok...but no fighting for around a month. Apparently the spleen is enlarged with mono, and a blow to it could be dangerous.
I have already put my little guy on a "personal water bottle" drinking regime, and have told him not to use the water fountains anywhere! This time, not to infect others! (I wish some other Mother would have done that before this happened!)
Our little guy is a real trooper and is doing his best to overcome some pretty difficult obtacles. Please keep him in your prayers for a very speedy recovery!

your er sounds about like ours around here. isn't it a shame that doctors have gotten the way they are. i think money is all they are out there for. i sure hope your son gets to feeling better real soon. i think alot of rest is important w/mono. my kids didn't have it but a friend's son did. take care & good luck.
