Suggestions for a New Vacuum?

I need to get a new vacuum after mine the other day started smoking. This vacuum has had lots of problems and we've fixed it several times but this time I don't want to even mess with it. By the time you buy new repair parts you can buy a practically new sweeper. So anyways, I am trying to decide on what kind to get. I've had dirt devils before but they always break and the last one was a Bissel so I'm not too keen on them either, lol. What kind of vacuum do you have? What do you like about it? Any ideas for me?

I have a second hand Kirby that I love, but my sister bought a Dyson and likes it better because it is not heavy. I have also had a rainbow and they are great (the dirt goes into a water container) the drawback with them is that you have to be careful or it will grow mold. it really depends on the money you are able or willing to spend. you might check ebay for a kirby becuase even if there are parts missing you can buy them cheap at a vacume store.

Yeah, the old Kirby's are very heavy. My mom had a rainbow vacuum and it seemed to work well, but the whole water thing is kind of a pain in the neck :) I got a cheap Eureka vacuum for now but I'm sure like the others I've gone through it won't last as long as I'd like it to!

Will give it a look. We got one that will work for now and so far so good (It's a Eureka) but I only expect it to last about a year or so :)

Not cheap I know but it's a one time purchase I love it. Check it out my friend. http://www.govacuum.com/nemis5catdog.html

I have heard good things about the Miele canister vacs and it is on the consideration list. They really aren't cheap though...so it's kind of up to me to decide if I want to buy one that lasts 10 years, or buy a new one every year...(I seem to murder vacuums, lol - I've been through 3 in the past 6 years!) I think this though is because I always buy the cheap ones and they just don't last at all.

That's like shopping for a new car, I've had Dirt Devils before and those things are too loud and I was better off using a lint roller on my carpet to get it clean. I've owned Bissel before, I just made sure to keep the filter clean and it ran for years, I miss that one, (a tear). I've always wanted a Kirby, they cost a lot but they are awesome, your friends will be begging to use it too. Dyson has a great concept, the roller ball instead of wheels but they cost a lot too. Hoovers suck, in a good way :) I guess just go to a Home Depot or Lowes and grab one and turn it on and see how you like it. Good luck.

Yeah, I will never buy a Dirt Devil again! I have not had much luck with the Bissel...so not too keen on that one :) I like the Dyson too but we looked at them at the stores and they almost seem like they are made out of the same cheapo plastic the others are! The Kirby's do last forever - my mom's had hers going on 30 years now! Thanks for the suggestions!
