but I did give it back
I went to pick up some photos I ordered online at CVS the other day and gave the cashier $10.00. Total cost for the photos was $6.57. I gave her $10 cash and she gave me $13.43 change. Just as well I check my change, or else she would of been short $10 in her till. I said to her nicely "you gave me too much change" and handed her the $10 back. She was very thankful and relieved at the same time. I was relieved for her too :)
Has anything like this happened to you? Do share :)

as i am now, i would have given it back. working at a register during high school i made my mistakes. i was once $5.00 under and it can get pretty stressful when you think your job is on the line. so now if i do get more i'll give it back. when i went to japan it was the other way around. i wasn't that used to the money and gave the person WAY too much to pay for my stuff and she kindly gave me back my money. she didn't have to and i wouldn't have noticed i gave her the wrong amount.
i also remember when i was younger (like about 8) and me and my sister went to Bimplie to get a sub and the girl gave up $20.00 back in change (the bills were stuck together) my sister took my hand and ran, but both of us now would definitely give it back. once you work the other side, you know what they're going through.

I can relate to working the other side as well, as I've worked retail and still do from time to time. I have heard of a few people being fired because of being short dollars in the till. I wouldn't have wanted that on her.

That was very honest of you. Alot of people wouldn't have given it back. I'm sure she was very gratefull as if the till was down I'm sure it would have been taken from her wages.
Good for you. It's nice to know there are some good people still about x

Either that or fired. I have heard people fired over shortage in their tills. It happens at my part time job.
Thanks for your nice comments mummyofthree!

I've had that happen before, but never to the tune of $10. Sometimes I would give the cashier a $5 for a pop or something, and she might give me back $4 in change, when I knew the pop was $2 and change. I kept the change, but it was because I didn't notice it until later, and then I might wonder why I have so much in change.
Most of the time I get ripped off. I've had arguments with cashiers before who overcharged me for something, or didn't give back change. If it's only a small amount, I won't say anything (like the other day at Tim Hortons when she owed me 10 cents back and just shut her till without giving it to me), but anything over 50 cents or more, I will.

I've actually had someone try to rip me off $10. I was watching her the whole time when I gave her the money and she never put it in the till right away. She was fluffing around between the till and the food preparation area. She had gone into her till twice (without giving my change) and I had noticed she lifted the till out of the drawer once too. When she finally gave me my change, it was $10 short. I told her I gave her a $20 and she looked shocked. I had just withdrawn $40 from the ATM in the store so I know that's all I had. She said if she opens her till it should be on top and I said well you should also check underneath because I saw you lift your till out. And she looked at me - I should of reported her to her Manager but I didn't. I just took my change and left.

Oh Yes, when I started getting sleepy, I would make mistakes like that too. At least the people that were there were always honest about it. I worked in a pub serving drinks. And sometimes when things got to hectic you make mistakes.
And most of these were drunk too, but still honest .
I was especially tired a lot because of the medicine I had gotten from the doctor.
I had worked there on Sunday for some extra cash, but then they started turning me into a cleaning lady. Well, if I would have had more energy and my back was okay I would not care, I would clean. But, this was not fair. First they know about my problems, then I am the only one cleaning. I come there once a week and have to clean up for the whole week. I can be nice, but I am not totally crazy.LOL!
Anyway, it is good of you to give the money back.
"Do good to others and good you shall receive." (Hopefully, hahaha!)
If that is true, then we have a lot to look forward too!
I believe in it.
Take care.

it is nice to know there are still some honest people left in the world. you absolutely did the right thing because she would have had to pay the money that she was short. let's face it, times are tough enough without having to pay money back to your employer. you should be proud for doing the right thing here.

Thank you mikeysmom. I was happy that I did the right thing. I have heard of employees being fired for their till being short. I have been fortunate to work on that side of the counter so I can understand how relieved she must of felt.

hello maddysmommy, it had happen with me several times where i was changed more than what I am supposed to received. If times like this happens I would usually return the excess change. Honesty is still the best honesty. I know that this people will surely repay what was lost and their salary is not that big and it will be deducted of what was given to me in excess. I know a lot of people are still honest in spite of the economic crisis what we all deal with. happy mylotting!!!

Well once my Mom had made me drive all the way back to a shop in a market because the lady gave her back 46 Rs change on a bill of 64Rs as my mother had given her a 100Rs note..I kept laughing at her that she spent more than 15Rs to return 10Rs change to the girl but now I can say that I would have done the same thing if I was in her place..You were honest to do it as like others said else it may have cost her her job..Till now nothing such has happened to me..Have a nice day!

I have had this happen. I am not gonna share what I did with the money, that is my little secert. I know that some people do not pay attention to their jobs and I feel that is sad. I mean the register does it all for you. I think sometimes people do it on purpose, at least that is my opinion on it. I guess that cashier lucked out because you are honest. Happy mylotting and have a good day!

Yes, I mentioned it in a discussion this past summer. While we were in Prince Edward Island I went grocery shopping with my girls and sister-in-law. The cashier gave me too much change thinking I gave her a $20 instead of a $10. My 12yo announced in a loud voice as we were walking away from the cashier, "Why did you give it back?" How embarrassing? Now it seems like my daughter is a would-be thief. As long as I check, I always give them back if they over-change me. I believe in God and that what goes around comes around, AND in doing unto others as I would want them to do for me.

It is very kind of you and you are very honest. You reminded me something happened in the bank. One day I wanted to transfer some HK dollars into RMB. But the bank staff made a mistake and she regarded HK dollars as USD so that my bank account had more money suddenly. I found it and I told her that she made a mistake. If I didn't tell her, then it's her big lost:)

First of all i would like to appreciate your kind and honest gesture towards the lady. She must be feeling very obliged as you returned her the excess cash.Kudos to you.
I had also one similar incident happened to me.Once i went to buy cosmetics. The shopkeeper showed me 2 kinds of massage cremes and face packs.I took one each and gave him the money. When i came back home i found that he put all 4 into my bag and charged for the only two.
I rushed back and returned the 2 cremes to the shopkeeper. He thanked me and i felt relieved.

Yeah. Same thing happened to me also. I bought some books. Total cost was Rs.40(Indian Rupee). I gave Rs.50. He gave the remaining as Rs.60. I wondered and asked him about whether he taught about i gave Rs.100 or not? He replied as 'yes. Sorry for my mistake.'. He said 'Thanks'.
He was very happy. I was also happy because i did not cheat him.

Wow! I bet she was so thankful that you did so. That's super nice for you - I hope karmic retribution comes around fast! :]
Unfortunately I've never been given TOO much change; although several times I've had the opposite happen (The most I've been shorted is like, eight dollars). If its only a couple dollars, I'll usually just let it go - but if it's a large amount, I'll usually go in & talk to the clerk about what happened. :/

Thanks maezee!
