Large yet kind

I want to get a large dog breed, but one that is not too rough. I've read a lot of books on dog breeds, but some of them only mention how loyal small to medium-sized dogs act. I'm already thinking about a getting a Border Collie or an American Staffordshire Terrier, but I'm interested in what other people recommend me.

We have a bull mastiff - very low key and gentle. then we have two labs both very sweet and gentle. All very good family dogs! I think it has more to do with the way you treat them!

We took in a Bull Mastiff from the street a few years back. He was very sick and did not last long, but I have to say he was very gentle and kind. We fell in love with him right away.

HI. I have a shpherd/husky mix, I got him from the spac when he was 4 months old. and he is very gentle, not rough at all. I also got a Lab/mastiff mix and he is only 4months old now and he is not rough at all. I was watching a dog show last night and they said that the Great Dane is very gentle and a family dog. I also had a Rotwiler and she was nt rough at all

How about a Great Pyrenees? They are known as the gentle giant. I never owned one, but this was one breed I considered when getting a dog. You can read more about this breed at this link: http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-breeds/dog-breed-profiles/great-pyrenees-dogs-dog-breed.aspx Good luck!

What is your lifestyle like? Do you like long walks, running, short walks slow walks? Do you want to spend a lot of time grooming your dog? Do you mind fur everywhere? DO you want an active dog? a laid back one? All thing to consider. Tell me more about yourself and your lifestyle.

I have two German Shepherds and can highly recommend them. All large dogs need plenty of exercise and they need to feel challenged. This means giving them plenty of training and lots of toys to play with. German Shepherds are easily the most loyal, most intelligent and best looking dogs anywhere.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT get a border collie unless you have tons of room for the dog to play. These dogs need to stay very active and require a great deal of attention. They are made to herd sheep and if you don't give them enough exercise, they will trash your house. Have you considered a Newfoundland. These are very big dogs, loyal, easygoing. They do have some trouble with nerves and I have heard of more than one dying from a flipped stomach. The best dog I ever had was a flat-coat retriever named Chester. He was super-smart, fun, and sweet. Not as obedient as I would have liked, but still a really great dog. If you get a retriever, be careful he is bred form European stock. The American retrievers are nut jobs (think Marley and Me).

My sister has a labrador retriever (a yellow, named Jake). He is the most kind, gentle, loving, intelligent fellow! If I were interested and able to have a larger breed dog, I would consider one like him in a heartbeat. He is exceptionally well-trained, smart, attentive, amazing with children of all ages... just a really lovely addition to the family. I was doing some research on Labs before commenting and I found an interesting note in a wiki entry that, because Labs are retrievers, they enjoy holding and carrying things in their mouths (from game and waterfowl to even hands and arms LOL). Evidently, they are so gentle that they can carry an egg in their mouth and not break it. I know Jake is a big dog that thinks he's a puppy, for sure (and he's well over 10 years old too!). If any of us sit on the floor, he'll want to sit on our laps LOL My younger daughter laughs herself silly when he tries this with her. He's definitely a hairy dude, mind you... they do a lot of vacuuming between him and the two cats. But, if a dog is welcome in your family, that's really a small price to pay, I imagine :) Good luck on your choice!
