How do you get rid of writer's block?

Broken Pencil Writer's Block - the frustration of writer's block
United States
February 5, 2009 7:36pm CST
I've been struggling to come up with things to write lately, and it's not for lack of motivation! I've been absolutely dying to write, and it has become such a frustration that I can't come up with anything to write about! I've tried free writing and writing prompts, as well as doing a lot of reading to try to get inspired. Nothing seems to work. Has this ever happened to you? How do you break free from your writer's block?

Writer's block comes and goes for me, but when it hits, it hits hard. At times, I feel the exact same way as you do. I have a really bad urge to write, yet when I sit down and open Word, I cannot even phrase one sentence! Writer's block is definitely frustrating. Usually I inspire myself by listening to music. I blare song after song until I can get myself writing. Sometimes reading lyrics or poems works for me. I try to find out the meaning behind the words and write a drabble or one shot based upon my interpretation. Sitting down for hours in front of a notebook, or computer screen does absolutely nothing. I go for walks, watch a movie, play video games, and try again later. I read a really badly written piece of fiction and I rewrite with my own improvements. I do the same with movie scenes. If all else fails, I just make myself write. It doesn't matter if my sentences doesn't make sense, or my writing's utter garbage. I keep on going until my writing smooths itself up. As I keep writing, it gets easier. That's what works for me personally, though. I don't know if it'd work for you, but it's worth a shot, right?

Your welcome! I get an ego boost when I read a badly written scene, and rewrite it better. LOL

i listen to music as well - i've developed a "write to it" playlist on my itunes over the years of songs that have helped me write. i'm interested in trying your idea of rewriting improvements in poorly written pieces - that's a good one! i'll give it a shot --thanks!

For some reason, free writing and writing prompts never seem to work for me. I've certainly experienced writer's block, and what I've done to overcome it is go out and do something. I've gone to movies, out to eat, or even just wandered around the mall where I could see people going about their lives. I often see things, whether it be interactions among people or just observations about people, that somehow set some thoughts in motion and help me get a great idea.

do you recommend bringing a notebook out with you on this? it sounds like people watching, there would be so much stimulation that it would be hard to keep all the thoughts in your mind until you get home to write them down. thanks for the advice - i think i'll try it :)

Oops - I should have mentioned that - yes, I do bring a notebook with me. Like you said, sometimes I have too many thoughts to remember them all. It really has helped me though!

I guess don't stress yourself too much. Don't think, just do it. You know, write whatever is the first that comes out of your mind and see where it would take you. If you're thinking and thinking hard about it, the more you're pressured and gets tension. So, it would be helpful to relax.

It has happened to me. I had to do one of those two things that helped stimulate me, take a really hot shower or go and get some exercise. This gives me some time to think about what I want to write down. Plus, it gives me some space from the keyboard and the intimidating white blank page. If you are looking for ideas, try googling something and see what pops up.

Even the best writers have writer's block and I suppose the remedy would vary from person to person. You're in good company. Cheers!!!

Free writing helps me...taking my materials to another location to try and generate new energy and ideas....sometimes just surfing the web and finding something I am passionate about...is enough to spark an idea or two... It's better to just write, instead of criticizing it....eventually the words come... Good luck

i like going to other locations as well, and usually find myself in coffee shops. unfortunately this hasn't helped yet this time, but maybe i just need a new venue!

I find that I experience writer's block more when I am not writing every day. If I manage to write something each and every day, then it all comes a lot easier. When I don't write consistently over a long period of time, it seems to work against me. The other thing that always seems to fill my head with thoughts is walking. Sometimes I can do it on the treadmill, but going outside is usually a lot better, particularly if I walk for 30 minutes or longer. A short walk won't do it. I need to clear out all the junk before I start having really good ideas or start thinking more abstractly. The other trick I have tried is really a writing prompt, but it seems to get the juices flowing and that is to pick up any novel you might have, take the first sentence from the book or any chapter, and just start writing. Trust me, you will make it your own. Then just throw away that first sentence, and voila! Good luck with your writing!

it happens to all of us and even to non professional writers. the mind just simply cannot go on like it use to every day so we need to relax our minds because there is too much clutter already like a filter of our airconditioning unit, it needs to be cleanse once in a while. if we lack sleep, that is where it starts. we need to recharge ourselves, do something else like listening to music and closing your eyes and lay down, you will be surprise that you have not even finish a song and wham! you have an idea.

Oh yes, this has happened to me more times than I care to admit. I've found that writing in my paper journal, even if I'm writing "I don't know what to write about" over and over, has been able to break me through bit by bit. Then, if that doesn't work, I'll take a notebook to a random place (like the library or a coffee shop) and write pages and pages describing what is around me. I try to get very detailed about these descriptions, including what I hear people talking about or what I think they might be talking about. Lastly, if those two don't work, I'll spend some time snapping off a bunch of pictures of random things with my digital camera (at least ten). Then, I'll try to make a picture live up to that saying about how a picture is worth a thousand words. I try to describe every picture I take in 1,000 words.

It's normal to experience writer's block. This apparently happens when our minds seemed to be under stress though unnoticed by the writer. Whenever this occur to me, I just let my mind rest for a while, take a quick nap or listen to nice music, just to let the block pass away. Sometimes I even consider trying other activities momentarily just to enjoy myself and unwind. After which I could get back to work and focus on the ideas that have already been processed by my brain.

It's a very distressing situation and I find that the more anxious I am, the worse it gets. So I learn to relax - free my mind and do other things like reading, watching TV, meeting my friends or go shopping. My mental block can last some time - well, I just let it be. In time to come, the ideas will start again. So good luck and meanwhile, relax and enjoy!

Like one of the responses says writer's block is a usually thing and sometimes you can't control it The best way to get rid of it is to find more inspirations. At least thats what happens to me, whenever i come upon writer's block i go out into the world and look for another inspiration. Inspiration is what started you writing in the first place so some times you gotta go and find that inspiration again.

haha, theweerouss, we have different problems. My problem is having too many ideas, so much that I dont know which one to start with. Till now, nothing publish yet, a long list of ideas still in the drawer, one of these days, really got to force myself to write. Where do all the ideas come from? I think from the fact that I love to talk to myself and imagine that everything can talk. For example, just now I went for a short walk, I started thinking "How nice if someone were to pay me $1 for every step I walk." Then I have a vision of a world where God paid us to walk. Alas, me is too lazy to write, why not you make something out of it?

haha, if only I have your determination to write. So let's ask God to do a simple maths operation. He just needs to combine your brain and my brain (1+1=2), then divide equally (2/2=1). In this case, we are balanced. We can go around and flood the internet with all our articles. Aren't it grand? Just a simple mathematics done on God's part!

You have to take a break from writing and even thinking about it. i go thru those spells and I just have learned to get into something else entirely for a bit. If I think to much....it makes it worse. If I get into a different type of project or focus on something else, then usually something will inspire me. Reading helps a great deal. i'll stop writing and get into a great book or two. Sometimes just a trip to the library browsing will inspire a thought on something to write about.
