Why are yawns contagious?

It's so weird how just seeing someone yawn can make another person yawn. I've often wondered why that happens and I really have no idea. Is it just some neurological phenomenon or what? And why is it that we yawn when we're tired? I've heard that it's because our brain needs oxygen, but I'm not sure what that would have to do with being tired, so I don't know if that's true. Any ideas?

I always have thought contagious yawning was psychological, an example of the power of suggestion at work. "Hey, he's tired...hmm, I'm tired, too." Of course, you don't consciously think that. I think itches can be contagious in just the same way!

we spout spit during the yawns, and there are some bugs which are contagious in the spit, when the others breath the air in,they will be infected.that's not some neurological phenomenon but biological phenomenon.hope this helps Have a good day

Interesting idea, but yawns are contagious over the phone too. I've even yawned when someone yawns on tv. Maybe I'm just too suggestible...

Well, I have heard the thing about our brain needing Oxygen and I think this is a lot of the reason why why Yawn when we are tired for sure. Then the reason I think it is contagious is when we see someone out there yawning, it sends a message to our Brain that we need Oxygen, so we end up following that person and then end up usually feeling better as well.

I heard some sayings that 'yawning are contagious'. You can notice that in a sitting area, if one person yawns, it seems you will notice another person will yawn too. It is quite amazing how this happens. By the way, I read somewhere too, that when we yawns our eyes will automatically closed. Is it dangerous to yawn while driving? We yawn when our body needs oxygen. It's sort of our body's mechanism to satisfy that oxygen-hunger! Opening our mouth to grasp more air is the quickest way to supply that need and maintain homeostasis in our body. Cheers and happy myLotting!
