Recently I bought a hair straightener and before actually choosing for the right one I did some window shopping. I found out that there are various brands, reputed, non reputed with varying price range. The price differences are whopping! I was naturally confused but ultimately went for a moderate priced one.
What would you do in such situations? How do you select your products? What are your priorities?

Hello Mimpi.......I am good at shopping for everything, except these dreaded electronic items.......Its a real ordeal to study about each brand and chose the right one with the minimum price tag and maximum performance. So while going for any electronic items,I just adopt the easy way out...I ask my sons to do it for me..and believe me they are really good at these sort of things, and believe me ,they along with their friends make a market survey and always come up with the best.......

I prettymuch follow similar patterns to you mimpi. I will check numerous brands and prices and I'll also check warranties usually. I am also very big on personal opinions from other people that have used similar products. When it comes to electronics, I will rarely buy the cheapest versions either. Mid-Range products with a solid reputation are hard to go wrong with!

HI James
since I do not know anyone here using hair straighteners, things were even more difficult. I short listed two similar looking different brands which were having a price difference of 1000 INR! I went for the higher priced one which provided me with a warranty. The other one, cheaper version was without warranty. Now, most would be lured to buy the one without the warranty with a much much cheaper price. That's the catch!

Hey mimpi! I wish I had waited to buy the one that I bought!
I don't even use the darned thing! I'm afraid it will dry out
my hair more than it is already! It also didn't make my hair
look too great! Maybe I just didn't know how to use it properly.
My hair is also too thin I think to use it. Anyway, they are
basically pretty much all the same and I know I should have
bought a cheaper one! I think I paid $29.99 for it! I don't
even remember what brand it is and then it went on sale for
$19.99! Now I wasted $30 on something I don't even use!

You know what Opal, after 1-2 use I got the feeling that its not for me aswell. I apply serum before the use but it does dry our hair more. And I already have straight hair. I bought it pretty much with the same price and now do not know if it is actually worth. My sister told me that she finds it very easy and it requires practise to fall in love with it. She just cannot do without it. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I used to see something and buy it straight off. But as i have got older and wiser i know check - ebay - amazon and other online shops before going to town to make a purchase. I like to see some of the other products and compare them but 9 times out of 10 i go for the first thing i saw anyway. Just leaves me feeling a little more confident with my purchase that i have done some tresarch. :-)

Some time ago i had bought a cd player for the car. It was a price concious decision of a little known brand and the shopkeeper tested it in my presence. After a couple of months of usage it stopped functioning. I tried exchanging it, repairing it, but was unable to do so.
I learnt my lesson after that and decided to go with the branded stuff. But although this decison was easy, it's not easy to decide between different brands and quite a different range of prices. Warranties normally last only for a limited time of 1 year or so and most branded products do not give a problem till then. After sales service is important, but for products of not very high value, sometimes the cost of the repairs and spare parts are at times so expensive that it's not worth it.
So to put into a nutshell Mimpi, I'm very bad at selecting these products. I go with reviews, or with references and then decide on something with an optimum price and decent brand, in other words what we call "value for money". How far that is true only time and experience with the product can tell right ?

I have found that some people are very electronics friendly, in the sense that they have good luck with the products they buy. It need not be a branded or expensive product! And some have hard luck no matter what. But its indeed a tough to decide on the right thing. Specially with so many brands coming up we are confused. Going by the reviews and googling for it help but then at the end of the day you cannot be 100% sure.

When buying electronic products, my highest purchasing factor is "Quality"...There are very known brands which have same quality with a not so known brand that costs less. I do not put too much attention with Brands because the reason why a product costs high is because of the Brand name. After which, take consideration also of the manufacturer and of course choose something that has warranty. Never trust Class A, imitation or substandard products because they may be cheap, yet they don't last and the quality is low.
Am very keen when it comes to products that I buy especially on electronics and appliances. I really go for the quality more then the price.

Hi mimpi,
I thought my budget is most important, then the brand and features I want in equal priorities.
If I am getting a hair straightener (guys won't lol), I will be sure to read the back of the bottles and try to size up which will really work.

Whatever little electronic items I have bought so far, I have given maximum weightage to the feedback of people known to me and have used the product. I have this advantage of having many young friends and batchmates who keep on experimenting with new products. The opinion mostly turns out to be very realistic. Apart from that brand also plays a great role. I fall into the category of loyal brand customers for mainly electronic items. If I have to choose a cell phone (within a reasonable price bracket)from Nokia, Motorola, Sony, Samsung etc, I'll most likely go for Sony or Motorola because I have seen family members using them and happy with the performance. For music system, it'll be definitely Sony. But for my recent Mp4 walkman I selected Phillips because of my friends feedback on this particular product model and since it was a tested thing I confidently opted for it. Then even if the price is minimally higher you don't mind because of the assured quality, durability and performance of the product.
I would definitely not suggest on 'impulse buying' as far as electronic products are concerned.

Hi mimpz! I actually look for the brand, warranty and what it says in the box or ask some friends that has the same that I'm going to purchase. I did bought a hair straightener before, but I only use it once and ended up giving it to my sister. I cant remember the brand and I'm not sure if its still working, lol. To be honest I'm not good purchasing electronics and I just let the family or Husband to decide.

Hi there. Well, considering that electronic products are quite costly, I think it pays to actually evaluate your options before going out to buy a product. Things I consider when buying electronics include the usefulness of the product I'm going to buy, how user-friendly it is, and how reasonable the price is. Sometimes, I also consider the brand of the items since, based on experience, it's better to buy more costly branded items that last long than get cheap, less costly items that you would be able to use only for a short time before you'd need to get them repaired. To sum it up, I usually go for electronic products which I feel would give me value for my money. Good luck in deciding which hair straightener to get.

User friendly, good popular review and comparatively less expensive I think we can use this tips for products that do not harm us , like DVD player, stereo...but we must entrust on good brands while choosing for things like hair straighteners, dryers...

When I purchase electronice products, I first consider the brand name to see if it is reliable and has good reputation or no. Second, I will compare the price. THirdly, I will look at the warannty. It's supposed to be a long term products so I will concern it carefully.

If it's something cheap and enticing, I'd buy it off the cuff, instinctively. Maybe Brand would be one factor that will come into play as I don't wanna fall prey to overselling tactics of some small-fry companies. As for costly gadgets, I never go out to buy any of those without having well-researched about them beforehand, no matter how incredibly irresistible they are. There are several factors that I take into consideration:
1. Brand
2. Warranty period
3. Price
4. Reviews I've heard and read about from various sources..I'd like to be familiar with the consequences of buying this product, in advance.
5. Store from which I'm buying - credibility, reputation and good treatment of customers are primal to me.

I make a lot of enquiries from stores as well as friends of family before finally deciding on any electrical product. More than the price I need to know the after sales service that is provided. I prefer checking out with those who have used the product rather than what the salesman has to say about the product.

The brand is a major factor when purchasing electronic products for me because trusted brand names do deliver the function in their products. They are more reliable than unknown brand names. Though they may be slightly more expensive than those non-branded ones, still you get the guarantee that what you're buying will perform its purpose. In case there is something wrong with the unit, these branded ones usually give warranties that the store have to comply to, I think.
When Im needing to buy something that I have absolutely no idea about in the brands as well as the prices, then I read consumer reviews either on the internet or just asking the main store assistant. There are those who give non-biased opinions and would really help you to get the product that you really want, regardless of price, brand, or style.
Though, when Im really going to buy something, my priority would be the price and the quality rather than the brand name. It doesnt have to be the number 1, it could be the number 8 but as long as the price of the particular product is within budget, it has good quality, and has positive consumer reviews, then Ill get that number 8 as opposed to the most likely very expensive number 1 counterpart.

Hi, I will also go for one with moderate price range. Before I purchase any electronic products, I will do some research online through some price comparison sites before making the purchase decision. Sometimes, the cheapest hair straightener may cause damage to your hair.

First thing would be the brand, I tend to buy a well known brand for quality control excuse. Then the price. Not that much considerations actually, if I need it and want it badly, I'll just buy it.

Sometimes I do like that, mostly, when in urgent need and before buying less expensive gadgets.
