I'm looking to buy a sewing machine and wanted to do some research on the best brand. I heard Janome was pretty good and I like their prices for the features they have on their maachines, but I recently seen other machines that seem to be superior and so is the price. I just want reviews on machines considered to be the best quality. thanks.

The machine you buy depends on what you are planning to sew. If you're going to be doing clothing and heirloom sewing, then you won't need as heavy duty a sewing machine than if you are making coats, or in my case teddy bears. I have owned Janome, Berninas, Brothers, New Homes, Singers and Elnas. My top choices are Janome and Bernina. Simply because they are better made and sturdier machines. In fact I am planning to purchase another Janome as soon as possible. I love the automatic buttonhole feature. I wasn't happy with the newer Brother I had purchased. I ended up selling it a few months after I had bought it. It couldn't handle the heavier duty sewing I was doing, such as making button holes in denim. I am haunting Ebay for a Janome 9000 embroidery/sewing machine. I had the 8000 model and had planned to up grade to a 9000 machine a couple of years ago, but problems with my daughter prevented me from doing this. Berninas are wonderful not only for garment sewing, but also for sewing heavier duty fabrics. I used mine for making teddy bears. I not only make them out of acrylic fur, mohair but I also make them out of real recycled furs. It handled the leather sewing like a dream. I used an older model like the 930, and also had a 707 minimatic. I'm not as sold on the newer Singers, Brothers and Elnas as they don't keep up with my sewing needs and are more of a quilting and lightweight sewing machine. But of course I am a bit biased as I expect my sewing machines to be work horses. As for price, check Ebay. There are a lot of stores that list machines (new ones with warrantee) at a much lower price than you can get them by going into a store front. Also consider if you want something like an embroidery machine, to go used. If you're thinking Janome, you can email me with any questions you might have, as I have done a lot of research on them.

I will also add that you might want to check Amazon.com. Sometimes they have things that you don't expect. Are you going to go into the dealers to check? One of the dealers that I know very well near where I live was giving me some information on the manufacturers of both machines, and it was a bit of a surprise to me what she had to say.

Thank you, I have been checking on ebay. I think I am going to look at the Berninas and compare it with Janome as to see which one would better suits my needs.

I have only used Singer and Brother brand and I would rather have a Singer, but I have heard that Janome are excellent. If you have the budget to do it - get the best that you can get. A sewing machine is an awesome investment.

The Singer and Brother brands are good machines I was looking for something a little more heavy duty. My sister owns both brands and they both had to get maintainence done after some uses.

I have had several Brother/Babylock machines over the 50+ years I have been sewing. I have always found them to be of good quality. BUT when you are buying a brand new machine I suggest you pay as much attention to the Dealer as you do the machine. My last new machine was a Babylock Ellageo, which is a sewing/embroidery machine. And I totally enjoyed this machine. But it is computerized and needs a good tech when needing adjusted or anything. My dealer was a real stinker, very slow to do any work on machines, unpleasant to be around. It was as if he thought once he had your money you were just something to push out of his shop quickly. So, please, check out how your dealer treats customers after they have purchased, not just how he/she treats you while you are buying.

Thank You, I had not thought about making sure the dealer was someone I could count on just in case the machine needed maintenance. I would keep that in mind.

Bernina has always been known for very good quality machines. We have both a bernina and a Brother which has also been good. I don't know what kind of range you plan on spending but there are some things to consider. If you're just begining to sew you might want to spend just a little on a machine that nicely does the basics - a couple hundred dollars. If you you're an avid sewer, though they're spendy, you might look for a machine that does more than just regular sewing - one made to accommodate quilting or does machine embroidery etc. Do your research on the internet on what machines are out there, their capability and prices. Then check your local sellers. My local seller came down several hundred dollars on my sewing/embroidery machine to match the internet price I found, and by buying it locally from an authorized dealer my warantee meant that I could have it fixed right there and not have to ship it off if something went wrong with it.

Thank You, I would start looking into local dealers it does help to go somewhere locally opposed to the hassle of shipping.

Hi Sahmof2 I have several sewing machines. I love my Bernina it olds a lovely 1/4 inch seam and sews like a dream. I do all my patchwork with it. I also have a Juki I use for maching quilting it's a real work horse and sews fast. My favorite if I had to chose just one would be the Bernina. I had it for 5 years and haven't had any problems. When it's time for a new machine I hope to get another Bernina but, the draw back is they are sooooooo pricey.

Last year I bough a brand new Singer Sewing Machine. It's a great thing and sews very neatly. I trust Singer as it is a brand with a history. My grandmother had Singer for all her life.

There are several good brands. Bernina's are excellent. Brother's are good, and so are Janome's and Singer's. Each has their low end and high end machines. It depends on what your looking for in a machine vs how much can you spend. Does the Dealer let you test drive the machine or give you demonstrations on differnt types of fabrics. Can you upgrade later. Do they offer classes free with the purchase? Support is everything from classes to servicing. Also machines bought out of Walmart, Target, Costco, are not of the same quality as from a Dealer. Also most Dealers will not quote prices over the phone. Go to Brother.com, Bernina.com, Janome.com, etc to compare different machine models and what they do. Then when you find several that you think you might like, Go to the dealers that support those machines and try them out. How a machine performs and feels to you is important. The one you bond with is great. There is not a wrong machine, but you do need to find what is right for you. Happy Hunting
