What do you clean first?

If you have people coming over and your house is in need of some tidying up (or serious scrubbing!) what is the first thing that gets cleaned? If say you only had time to do one room which is the most important?
My first priority in always the bathroom. I know people don't spend a whole lot of time in there (hopefully!) but I always notice a grubby bathroom at other peoples' houses so I want mine to be super clean for guests. After that is the kitchen because I don't want people to feel icky about eating or drinking something that came out of there. Last but not least is the living room, even though we usually spend the most time in there it's the least labour intensive job so I save it for last.
What about you? What are your cleaning priorities?

I don't have a hard time choosing because I still live at home and my own room is pretty much the only room I have to clean. I do help around the house, but it's not something I have to do on a regular basis. So basicly when I have friends over I clean my own room and that's that .
If I had more rooms of my own I would definitly go for the litterboxes and the bathroom. I personally hate a smelly or icky looking litterbox so even though that's not a room it's something I clean on a very regular basis and I would like it to be as clean as possible when guests come over. Also, you wouldn't want to be on a dirty toilet, so your cats won't like it either.

Very much agreed. Me and my fiance take turns cleaning out the litterbox. There are other chores we split up, but because we both aren't too fond of cleaning the litterbox we have decided to share the burdon, lol! Have a good evening!

Yes, litter box is a good one! That is one of my fiance's 'chores' around the house - I do everything else and he does the litter and takes out the garbage. Our litter box is in the back porch which is where you come into the house so it is absolutely top priority when we know people are coming over. There's nothing worse (other than possibly a dirty bathroom) then walking into someone's house and smelling cat pee.

Funny, I'm replying to this discussion while taking a break from scrubbing so my family can come over. Ha ha.
I live with 2 kids and a very messy and unhelpful husband, so my place is always a huge mess. I'm not a clean freak by any stretch of the imagination, but most of my family is. Clutter doesn't bother me much but dirtiness does. Right now the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer are all running.
My order of importance is 1) Living room - It's always a mess with toys and things strewen about the floor. I clean it first cause it's where we spend most of our time.
Second is the bathroom. Just like you, the last thing I want guests to see is a nasty bathroom. ICK!
If I have time and energy left I do the kitchen. At the very least get the dishes done. We never eat here with family, so I don't have to worry about them thinking it's nasty. If we want food we go out.
Now when I go on a super cleaning binge I do some upstairs too. The bedrooms get the once over. The bathroom upstairs I never touch. It's my hubby's bathroom and it is DISGUSTING. The only thing I do in there is shower and bathe the kids, so I keep the tub good and clean, but if he thinks I'm cleaning his yucky beard hairs out of the sink, he can just forget it! lol.
Oh well, back to cleaning! Good question!

I always start with the kitchen because that's where everyone enters into when they come in. I try to keep the kitchen clean anyway, but there are days when it looks like a bomb has gone off in there. LOL I have a bathroom right off the kitchen that I clean or touch up, depending on it's condition, the same time I clean the kitchen.

I would do the bathroom first, of course! And it's important for my kitchen to be clean. I keep my house pretty neat and clean the bathroom once a week, the kitchen nearly every day.
What's really messy is my dining room table. It's just an old laundry table that the previous owner left in the basement and it's all torn up and warped but I keep a pretty tablecloth on it. That's where I pay bills and open main and it all tends to pile up!

Our kitchen table is nothing but a junk collector. We hardly ever eat there, it's just where things get set and forgot about and before you know it you can't even see the top! I want to get a two person bar style table for the kitchen just so there's less surface area to collect junk.

I try to always keep my house clean, but as far as tiding up for guest it would probably be the living room because that is the place the family spend the most time in so it will be a little messy and if the guest arrive that is the first room they will be in. I try to keep my bathroom scrubbed clean because it is constantly being used and I cannot use a dirty bathroom, so I will see if that needs tiding because I want the guest to feel comfortable using it and a fresh and clean bathroom is a must. I will tidy up the kitchen just to put the finishing touches on the house and as you stated you want the guest to feel safe to eat at the house.

That's my first priority too. I hate going to someones house and the bathroom is so nasty I hold it until I get back to my house. My second has to be the Entry Way. I like to make a good first impression. Then the Kitchen which is normally clean at my house. So no hard feelings there.

I always keep my house clean, so I don't worry about someone stopping over. I've done this all my life, even when I worked full time and had young children or a house full of teens when my kids got older. We had a pretty good-sized home and I never had any help, so I'm living proof that it can be done if you work at it.

My first priority is always the bathroom, too. It seems inevitable that, even if a guest drops in for only a few minutes, they end up using the bathroom. I definitely notice when a bathroom is unclean and it makes me uncomfortable. Even if I have already cleaned the bathroom that day, if someone is dropping by, I'll run through with the windex and paper towels or what have you, and wipe out the sink, shine the faucet, make sure the mirror is clean and wipe down the toilet. I consider it a courtesy to a guest.
Next priority is the kitchen. I agree that it's important, when you're going to be serving food or drinks, to make sure the kitchen's really clean. I know people who have trouble eating food anywhere but in their own home so, if they will eat at my house, I take it as a compliment LOL
After that, it would be general tidying in the living room, dining room and "prodding" the kids (*ahem*) to tidy their bedrooms. If there's time, I'd zoom around with the swiffer and the electric broom.
Sometimes, having company is the best way to get the house clean, really LOL!

I had never tried cleaning wipes before and there were some Mr. Clean ones on sale last week. I picked them up to see what they were like and I have to say they are really handy. Just one was enough to quickly rewipe the bathroom today to freshen things up... I was pretty impressed :)

I do it your way too. I always start with the bathrooms, then kitchen, then lounge and dining and then my sons room - if friends bring their kids then I know they'll be in his room most of the time.
I try to keep the house tidy at all times but it isn't always possible LOL

That's usually the route I go too, bathroom, kitchen, dining room, then living room. If I had time to clean one room only, I'd do the big jobs and have the kids do the smaller ones. Thankfully we don't get company very often!

hello jesssp
when i know that i am going to have company coming over, the first place that i make sure is clean as well is the bathroom. then i go from there into each of the bedrooms, then into the living room and then in the dining room and into the kitchen. i love to cook and entertain my friends and family when they come to my house to visit. dinner is always on the menu when i have guests. and something cold to drink as well like some homemade sweet tea with lemon juice in it.
take care and have a beautiful evening.

Hello jesssp,
My kitchen and bathroom always gets cleaned first. No wait...the kitty litter, definitely that stench! Laundry piles up until Sundays and the rest gets done a little at a time, like dusting. Once a month I clean my staircase.
Meow & Ciao!

I always have to tidy up before anyone visits. I can't understand how people keep the house tidy with kids about. I'm forever cleaning everyday and by the end of the day its a mess again.
The kitchen is the first place I clean as that is always the messiest and the last place is my bedroom as no guests see that room:)

My first would be the kitchen. I have an open floor plan. When you open the front door, you walk into living room but can see in the dining room, kitchen and den. The kitchen in my opinion is the most noticeable when messy.

I start in the kitchen, since it's the first thing people see when they come into my house. I like it to be clean and no dishes in the sink. Next is the bathroom, but that usually doesn't need much work, because I like to keep it clean all the time anyway. All other areas are usually fine, with maybe a little clutter of toys, but I don't mind that- we have a toddler who plays with toys a lot and I see no need to try to hide that.

Bathroom.
Because people are bound to use the bathroom. And nobody likes to use a dirty washroom. I mean i would have a not so pleasant impression of the place IF the bathroom was horrible. I'm quite particular in this case. NO idea why.

I think I will clean the bedroom first, it should be a good living habit.
