I don't like clowns, I'm not "afraid" of them, but I don't find them particullary funny. I have to say I can see why people are afraid of them, they do make me nervous, since you can't really see their faces. Emmit Kelly was a famous clown, probably one of the first of the "tramp" clowns. The harliquins were early clowns. And I didn't use your link....

I think my favorite clown is Garden Gerty. She is a modification of a Hobo type clown, a gentle and foolish soul. She is me, or the me I would perhaps like to be. She was the last clown I portrayed in the troupe of Christian clowns.

There were the "fools" in the early days. Sometimes clownish, sometimes not, often doing things that clowns did later, but also acrobaticts and the like. There are Saints in the Church that were "Fools for Christ."

I have had good experiences with clowns never had a problem with them except for one and that was Stephen King's IT clown..but I have two nieces that are so scared of clowns they get freaked just seeing one on television and they have always been that way. Maybe one nieces came from when she was little a baby she was forced to sit on a clowns lap to take pictures..and I don't know why the other one is scared one is 20 and the other is almost 18 and still they are scared even knowing they are not harmful.

Nope that was impossible they didn't meet till my niece was 4 and my husbands niece is older. They both already had the fear of the clowns before they met.

I don't like or dislike clowns. I don't have a fear of them or anything. One of my favorite books is about a clown. The famous Pennywise in Stephen King's IT, that goes around luring kids into his deadly trap. I can see where kids gets a fear of clowns after just looking at a picture of Pennywise. I know there is a phobia of clowns, I just didn't know the name until I went and read your story. My brother in law has coulrophobia, according my husband even today he gets freaked out by seeing clowns. Only famous clown I can think of is Bozo the clown. I think it's interesting that clowns originated from jesters.

Well Bozo the clown comes to mind. I didn't care about clowns as a child. I found them neither scary nor funny. I had a friend in high school that was afraid of clowns.

You know, being a clown would be an ideal job for me. I'd wear so much makeup no one would recognize me. I'd have a weird wig and no one could see I lost so much of my hair....I found it winterose, I know what I should do for the rest of my life!

Ok..... I guess I did like one thing too. When they would fight with buckets of water and then throw a bucket towards the audience and it was confetti. I liked that one!

The only clowns I have I have ever seen was in a circus and a parade. never got close to one so they never scared me. But I do think they are funny. Now when I was reading this the first thought was Court Jesters and England . From movies I have seen with them in it.

I never really liked clowns as a child growing up and after watching Stephen King's IT I am convinced I will never like them again. There is something about them I cannot trust and I find them rather creepy. I could think of some famous clowns but as I don't like them I would not want to give them any additional exposure by naming them. :)

lol, they have exposure so whether you name them or not doesn't change anything, you are ready named one, the clown from it, pennywise.

I don't like clowns. I know that they are supposed to make you laugh and all that! Seeing one on stage at some distance is okay; but when they get nearer to me (like face-to-face) I can't help feeling depressed. They really don't look happy, rather garish!

I grew up in Chicago, home of Bozo's Circus. So everyday when I was little I would watch Bozo, Cookie, and sometimes Wizzo get into their wcky antics. I always felt alittle bad for Cookie as it seemed that Bozo always gave him a hard time. Wizzo did seem a bit odd, but as an adult I realize it was becauze Wizzo was a bit odd. So no, clowns don't frighten me in the least. I don't always think they are always funny, but somtimes I don't think they are trying to be.

The fear of clowns is called Coulrophobia. I don't care for clowns that much. They don't scare me but I find them rather annoying. Some are a little creepy. Why do all (or at least the vast majority) of clowns have to be dirty looking middle aged men?

that is a type of clown the hobo, that was made popular during the great depression, reflecting what was actually happening to real people back then, if you read the link you might find it helpful it mentions that.

well I think a person or kid who has never got a knowledge about what is comic or humour ? may see a clown . i think a clown is nothing but an agent to keep children upto parental limit comedy. It is just to keep a person away from matured humours . So i think u r inncocent .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like clowns, I have performed as a clown. Obviously, I like them. Our particular group shared the idea that when we painted on our clown tears we were taking on the sorrow of the world so that the people seeing us could have joy.It would be interesting to see what your a/c article says.

I think I went to a circus maybe 2 times when I was a child. Clowns are alright I have never been scared of them but I'm not really crazy about them either. I have also watched clowns on television in the past and seen them in movies. Some clowns are funny like a old one Red Skeleton. He was really funny as a clown years ago.

I don't really care much about clowns right now as they are not a very big part of my life. But I remember when I was a kid my parents used to rent clowns for me and my brother's birthday. I know of some kids who are afraid of clowns and who cries whenever they see one coming towards them. I on the other hand enjoyed them during my childhood. I never really got frightened of them.

Umm.. I am kinda scared of clowns.. They just seem scary to me. I saw the movie "it" and that just blew me across the room to under my bed sheets. They look like they just want to meet kids and kill them up or something. Jason and Freddy are nothing to clowns. Well thats for me to say. Clowns arent my thing and I dont go to circus. Actually I havent gone for like 10 years now. I just dont want to see them. Even if they are funny they just make me wanna break.
