Do you collect coins? How do you normally determine the value of it as it's not always how old the coin is but the condition, the rarity of it & also the demand for it at the moment? Also, at times, the price solely determined by the seller, at the cost he's willing to part with it? Well at least that's what I understand. So how do you normally go about it? Is it through a price guide? Any valuable tips? Any helpful tips or links? Thanks in advanced!~

Hello zweeb82! I used to collect coins especially when one of my boardmate's sister gave me a coin and it's a hongkong dollar. But I really don't know the value of it. Now I stopped doing it and most of the coins that I collected got lost.

Ummm....never collected coins my entire life or to say even until today. I think the main reason is the color of coins are so boring though I know the will bring a lot of money when one intends to sell them. They are just smelly and make your hands dirty and the color grey grey so boring. At least stamps would be more interesting as there are colors on them. Nope never collected coins and don't intend to but would be benefiting from the $ you make when you sell them........LOL !!!!

I don't collect coins. But my grandfather does. He has some very interesting ones too. You might try this site www.monex.com/best_value_gold_coins if you haven't already.

Hi Zweeb82, I am also into coin collecting. I am more into Philippine Coins during the American Period. I also collect current American Coins like the US Presidents Dollar Coin and US Statehood Quarter Coins. Aside from that I also have quite a number of International Coins from almost all continents except Antartica. I also plan to collect all Euro coins from all Nation.
For the question on how to grade, they have a set of standard for different types of coins, though not all coins have a standard to follow, only those that are popular and high value.
For the price, basically the older the better and the rarer the better plus the state of the coin and finally the metal contents of the coin.
How bout you, what coins are you into?

Cool!~ I'm actually selling off my collection on eBay, haha!~
Well, besides the condition, the scarcity of the coin I should say at the end of the day overtakes whether the coin is older or newer, don't you think? Oh, here's the URL if you're interested to have a look:

Up till now, I still haven't got the time to list all of them up though. I would say one of my most priced possession is the Straits Settlements coins from my great grandmother. These ones are unique as they are coins welded with tin to make a small loops that were used as buttons around the 1920s or 1930s

Good to know you're a collector yourself. I've got coins on sale at eBay as well just in case you're interested. You can PM me for the link. Just to be safe 'coz I don't know whether myLot allows us to post links here as I haven't been around for quite a while.

My family started a coin collection when I was little, and I've kept doing over the years. I found a handy pricing guide online that gives me the current value of what people are paying for what type of coin. I continue our coin collection now with my grandson. It's a great hobby, and hey, you never know what's going to pop up in your pocket full of change lol.
This first link has all the latest coin values, from Silver dollars, to Buffalo nickels and such. It's updated daily so it's always current.

This next one is a must for coin collecting 'newbies', and it has some really good advice and external links. It's a hobby site, and it also has listings of books for checking prices and all that. (I get the books from the Library because every year the prices change so much.)

Cool!~
Thanks for those helpful links!~ If you had responded earlier I would have surely given you a best response as I just gave out a BR for this discussion just before you responded
Actually I'm trying to clear my whole collection as I haven't got much time nowadays & if I keep them too long without proper care the condition of the coins might just deteriorate & so will the value of it if I don't clear them off
