Hello friend. It depend what kind of server you need, for what kind of use, and how much you want spend for it.
I used several used Compaq ML 570, and they are still great, if you need a small/medium business server. If you put on it a slackware (or any other linux distribution server oriented) their performance are still really good as file server.

If your budget is few, i guess you can easily find on the surplus market some old but good compaq ML 570 series. Is easy to find dual or quad processors (they often use 2 or 4 pentium 3 1000mhz), 1 gb ram, 3 or more scsi 1000 rpm 18gb disks "hot swap" with hardware raid controller, 3 redundant power supply (also hot swap).
Here in italy you can find that kind of servers for around 250 us$. I suggest you to find one of them, and try it. Is a good an reliable computer, and the redundant power supply as well as the raid controller, give you a reasonable warranty about a 24/7 running time.
I've one of these machines working as file server in a company with more than 20 clients, started more than 400 days ago, and never needed to restart it ;)
