Dear Sunil,
No college administration gains by blocking useful sites. What could have happened is that they have blocked a category which contains your useful site too.
For eg: Every college admin blocks audio downloads because dowmloading music is not related to studies & reduces the internet bandwidth available to others.Unfortunately the english/french audio lessons sites get blocked in this process.
If you could make a list of all these sites & give it to your management, it is not big deal to feed in the site name & get it unblocked.
Do keep me posted on the developments.

Haha, they do that in my school too.
The purpose of this is not to get you distracted while you're doing work on sites that they think are unproductive. You said that some of the sites they blocked are useful, and I can't think of a reason why they would be blocking those, but I'm sure they found a malicious use for it (or it has been used for purposes other than education in the past) and they thought it would be better than block it. I'm sure they haven't blocked any educational sites or online encyclopedias that you use (if any), have they?
Schools are like that - they want you to be 100% focused on your project, homework, assignment, or whatever it is. This means no going on myLot while you're supposed to be doing work!
