Hi friends,
Passive smoking is the involuntary inhalation of smoke from tobacco products.
In India smoking is prohibited in public places (Hotels, restaurants, airports, markets etc) and there is a ban even in private offices. But I doubt the effective implementation of the same. So we all are become passive smokers/second hand smokers, either in the bus stop or in the market or some other places etc. I heard that in foreign countries there is fixed places for smokers and the places banned for smoking is strictly out of smoke.
We all are aware that passive smoking is also injured our health. What is your feeling when you happen to smoke second handedly? Do you feel helpless because the issue is not in your hand? Do you ever felt angry or ever tried to react against the same?
Please share your thoughts and I would like to apologize those who like to smoke. There is no intention to hurt your feelings and you may feel free to respond. Thanks to everybody.

hi, sree:
it must be true that the population of passive smoker is larger than positive smokers, right?
i am suffering from passive smoking. u know, the population of smokers around is so large that my sorroundings is almost never out of smoking. if the smoker is ur relative or good friend, maybe u can stop him. but otherwise?
in our country, China, it's the similar problem on smoking to ur country. even though there are special places for smokers, smokers are all around.

Hi wangchunlin,
Yes I agree with you. The number of passive smokers is more than the number of active smokers because the active smokers are less in number but they won to make their neigbhours to a passive smoker (lol). I understand if a stranger is smoking infront of us it will be difficult to stop the person. But we have to develop the habit of reacting if see any act which against the law or if it disturbs us in any manner. But many lack the courage to react or just think that let them do what they like. In my opinion the mentality of the people should get changed then only there is any hope. Until that we can only blame the government for not implementing the law properly.
Many thanks for sharing your views. Happy mylotting, good luck.

As a child I just have been since my father was an active smoker then. He has apparently stopped smoking now. but it took a major heart attack and a coronary angioplasty to refrain him from that. He was addicted. i work in a hospital and there I do not have any chance to inhale the carbon. However, the pollution level is so high that by the time you reach home you have had some nice sessions of carbon inhalation. Courtesy: our unawareness, our stupidity, our lack of initiation.

My uncle passed away this January. He had lung cancer as well. He smoked like a chimney! And yes, these people will never understand.

Indeed, you are on the dot, many of us, who are not the 'actual' smokers, suffer from passive smoking. I so not smoke a cigeratte and I dislike its smell and fumes, however, sometimes I find myself in such a position that I am left with no other alternative but to bear it. Whenever I land in such a situation, I try to move away from the place, if it is possible or request the person to smoke elsewhere. We face various forms of pollutions in our day to day life and smoking adds to those other pollution.
Good Post!

Awareness should come automatically to those, who smoke and they need not be imparted some education on this point, I think those who smoke know that it is harmful for everybody.

Hi Deepak,
Yes sometimes we trapped in such a situation especially in bus; there is no other alternative because only a few people are ready to listen to the request of co-passengers. In my opinion people should ready to react against the violation of law but it is not good to watch the people let others to do whatever they like even if it harms the people.
Thanks for the sharing your views, have a nice day.

Hi Cupid,
Thanks for coming as the first number. So you are a passive smoker because of your friends. Naturally you can't react. But I think you are enjoying the same also, there is no other way, is it (lol). I understand your situation, friends are your assets. But please understand the side effects too.
Best of luck, you take care.

yup, although it is banned in public places, there are manypeople around us who smoke and nobody even bats an eyelid. Many smokers will argue that smoking is their right and they can do whatever the please with their bodies. They do not realize that smoking affects even those around them. Research has indicated that passive smoking, or secondhand smoking, can also have serious effects on an individual's health

Hi Riya,
You are absolutely right Riya, the passive smoking is more dangerous than direct smoking especially for kids. I agree that they have their own rights but they don't have any right to harm others health. So they should respect others right as well. But I know they won’t change their stand because they are addicted to it and they don’t like if anybody questions it. Government is trying to limit the dangerous effect by putting a ban for smoking in public places but lack of enforcement is another problem. In my opinion people should realize the same by themselves. However, the sad news is, when they realize it, it may be too late (most of the people realized it, after they become cancer patients).

Yes and I really hate it. My mom smokes a lot and I am very sensitive to the smoke. It triggers my sinusitis, so I couldn't breathe whenever I inhale it. I am irritated deep inside but I don't want to hurt my mom because one time I told her not to smoke beside me, she felt insulted. She even smokes in air-conditioned rooms which makes it a lot worse! If she smokes, I go out for a while... As a kid, my father would also bring me every weekend to my grandparent's house where the adults drink and smoke. My mother wasn't smoking that time so she often told me "They are making like a chicken." Pertaining to the cockfighting thing where the owners of the chickens smoke to their fighting chicken to make them brave. I don't understand that. lols!

Hi Jaymeeliz,
I can understand your situation. If we don't like the smoke it is very difficult to adjust if somebody smokes around. You are tolerating the same at home. What to do we are helpless when closed ones don't understand our problem. If it is in a/c room then it must be closed and the closed doors add the problem. I hope you can find out some way to get out of the smoke. Tell her in a lovely tone so that she won't feel insult. I think you better know your mother so can handle the situation.
Many thanks for sharing your experience. Stay healthy
Best of luck

Hi Sreekala! I am smoker and to be honest I really want to stop this bad habit. I smoke, but I always respect those people around me who doesn't smoke. I never smoke near the children and I don't really smoke in public area, because I don't want the people stared at me. And when I do smoke outside only in the open area that there's no much people or in smoking place that I'm allowed to.

Hi CJay,
Even though it was shocking news for me but I have to appreciate your honest reply. I know that as a mother you are concerned about your family's health and will take necessary safety measures. I am glad to know that you wanted to quit the bad habit and I am sure that you can do the same by slowly. It is not at all a big task for you to quit smoking first try to reduce the number and you will be out of the habit soon.
Many thanks for sharing. Have an excellent day. Best of luck.

I think the effect against smoking publicly have come to no use..Initially I had thought that it would be hard to implement the law with the uneducated mass but now while the conductors or none of the poor people I have met smoke publicly-on the other hand office goers smoke while standing in the bus stand..what a shame for the men who are learned. Most of the time I feel helpless as I can't find a authority nearby so I know even if I ask the person to stop it will be to no avail..But I had asked a person to stop smoking once in a restaurant while I was with my friend who is ashthamatic and the staff over there reacted swiftly..Thankfully that man obeyed..But I just don't understand why they have to be reminded to not do something that is illegal..

Hi ifa,
We just can't avoid it as the people are so careless and hardly think about other's health.
I am really sorry for the late reply. I was checking the old discussions and find out that I got replies here again which I didn't know (not got any notification).

I'm a smoker, and i want to say, i wouldnt smoke wherever that is banned and not allowed by the Singapore Government, otherwise to be slapped with a fine. I would like to point out that although i do respect the non-smokers, are the smokers getting any respect?
If any of my friends mind being a passive smoker, due to health reasons, they do tell me politely, and i will be more then happy to move slightly away from them.. But sometimes, when i was smoking in a smoking area, (yeah, a smoking area). Non-smokers would walk pass me, giving me a stare, cover their nose with a hankerchief as if the smoke i exhale is even more dangerous then nuclear..
We should respect the non-smokers, but likewise, non-smokers shouldnt treat smokers as aliens, or monsters that will kill them just by inhaling passive smoke while they are walking pass me in a smoking area!!~

Hi allentcl,
I respect your comment and appreciate your honesty. But I can't blame those non-smokers when they felt fear about the inhalation of smoke by second hand. They must be forgetting your rights as a smoker. If you smoke in smoker's areas then it is not good to stare at you because you are in the allotted place. I would like to apologize, if you felt hurt with my discussion. I do appreciate your concern about others. But people seldom respect the bad habits of other’s. It is a common nature of human beings. So please understand them.
Many thanks for your frank reply. Have an excellent time.

Hi priyankajudiya,
Thanks for sharing. I am happy to know that you are a non smoker but my question was about passive smoking. If a person smoke nearly then you become a victim of passive smoking. Passive smoking is dangerous than active smoking. So be careful if somebody smokes near to you and try to keep away from the smoke.

i am an active smoker and we also have the sense that the person beside us is suffering because of us but if we stop smoking that does't mean the problem is resolved we still will suffer from passive smoking as the smoke emitted by cars and chimneys, factories etc etc are the major contributer to the passive smoking not just cigerette smokers.

Fortunately nobody at my home smokes. But sometimes I will meet some people who smoke in the public and sometimes I have to suffer to it. I don't like the second hand smoking and I don't understand why they like smoking. It smells so bad. Our boss smokes, so we are passive smokers because of it.
I love China

Hi youless,
The people who like to smoke won't understand about our dislikes (lol). What to do? Actually all the smokers suffer in a later period but they don't realize at present and regret in later. I wish those people should understand and think about it and try to come out of the bad habit, at least for their own sake... sigh.. we can only wish.
Thanks dear for you valuable time. Have a nice day.

Hi rainmark,
It is natural by getting irritated if somebody who does not like smoking and when they happened to watch people who smoke in the restricted places. I think those people should respect Law or showing some concern about others. If so they will never violate the rules.
Many thanks for your participation. Happy mylotting and good luck.
