Does your dog "tunnel"?

I love my little chihuahua, and I have asked quite a few questions here about his behavior. But I have never had one before, and he does such curious things. He sleeps in the bed with me, and he tunnels under the covers. During the day whether he is in my lap or on the couch alone, he wants to be under a blanket - or ANYTHING that he can get under. Do all chihuahuas do this?

I guess it is. I didn't know so many dogs did this. It's the first time I have ever seen a dog do that. But in the past I have always had big, outside dogs. My poodle, and this chihuahua are the first two small house dogs I have had. (My parents wouldn't let me have a dog in the house when I was growing up). My poodle doesn't do this....so it was new to me. Thanks for your reply! (I love shih tzu's)

Hi, hows it going? I do not have a dog as a pet. I do have a cat though and she loves being under things and I have no idea why. Maybe it is just a pet thing. Hope this helps. Have a great night.

Hello Toofancy; Welcome to MyLot!
As per your Chihuahua, I do not think that this is a behavior that is found strictly in that breed of dog.
My Yorkie sleeps in bed with me also.
Although she doesn't tunnel, she does have her favorite blanket that she is forever looking for when it is time to nap.
Kind of similar to CatsandDogs Chihuahua, Peanut.
Roxy has her blanket when she rides in the car.
It goes from couch in the day time to the bed at night.
It is full sized, fleecy and very soft. Roxy does not like to sleep under the blankets when she sleeps on my bed with me during the night.
In the morning she will come and cuddle with me under the blankets but her head must be out.
Now, my brothers Russel Terrier is a real goofy dog with tonnes of character.
He is a Tunneler.
When it is time for bed, he wont wait for anyone, he gets up there and crawls under the blankets.
That is where he stays, all night long.
He also has a blanket that he has on his chair in the living room.
Again, a full sized blanket.
He tunnels under that at times too.
I am not sure why he does this.
I reckon it is because he doesn't want light shinning in because he wants to catch some shut eye.
I think that the difference between the Yorkie not doing this and the Russel Terrier doing it is that Roxy, the Yorkie is, well she has some issues due to past mistreatment that she isn't quite over with yet.
Whereas Jack, well, he didn't come from a very great back ground either but
he came to my brother at two and is now nine,
so he has had many years to work out his stuff.
Roxy came to me in August 08 and will be two in May 09.
I think that your little Chihuahua is a confident little dog and I wouldn't worry about his choice of sleeping arrangements.
I think it is cute. Don't you?

Most of them do, yes because they don't have much fur on their little bodies and will try anything to get warm. I have a 10 year old chihuahua and he's forever looking for his blanket that I leave on the couch for him. He even likes to ride in the car with his blanket. I buy the small fleece blankets from walmart or the like for him so I'll always have a clean one for him to use. My parents have had a number of them and they all loved to be in their doggy beds with blankets so yes, your little guy is normal.

Your dog is really cute! WHat's his name? My dog likes fleece blankets, too. But like I said, he'll get under anything....sheets, coats, jackets, any discarded clothing laying around. He doesn't descriminate when it comes to getting under covers!
