The character actor was perhaps most recognized for being a longtime television pitchman for Miracle-Gro plant food. But his many movies include the highly regarded "The Shawshank Redemption," in which he played the character "Brooks," a long-time prison inmate who kills himself after being released. Whitmore's stage performances included one-man shows about Harry Truman, Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt. The Tony and Emmy-winning actor was also nominated for an Oscar. He got his Oscar nod for the film version of the play about Truman, becoming the only actor ever nominated for a film that had just one cast member. Whitmore's credits also included the musicals "Kiss Me Kate," "Oklahoma!" and original "Planet of the Apes." On television, he won a Emmy in 1999 for a guest role on "The Practice." Whitmore's son said his father was diagnosed with cancer a week before Thanksgiving and died this afternoon at his home in California. Whitmore was 87. "[/i] i never saw the shawshank redemption but i wasnt at the age when it came out to like it.. seems like a lot of actors are dying of lung cancer lately
