Does anyone know why it takes a week for a Doctor to write a sick note?

I have broken my leg, the hospital GP initially told me it would take 6-8 weeks to heal.
After I got out of hospital I had to wait a week for my GP to write a note which was for 4 weeks, now surely he would know that I would need a new one for at least 2 more weeks, so why is it going to take a week, yet again when he knows what the problem is and knows there is no way I can make an appointment unless it's a home visit?
If you have been able to go to the doctor for a sick note, did that take a week, or could he do it straight away? Is it a matter of out of sight, out of mind?

Dory in professional mode: Of course it takes a minimum of a week as the doctor has rather a lot of paperwork to get through and yours is probably way down the list of priorites.
Dory in non-professional mode: I went and got a sick note from my own doctor, he actually MADE me have a sick note as he decided I was too ill to work, then when I went a week or so later he wrote me out another one there and then. Maybe you do need to either hobble your way to the doctors yourself or ask for a home visit, I'm afraid I don't think much of your doctor.
Dory in 'sister' mode (this is the one that counts): What would you like doing about it?
