Do you drink "for the highs" or to "escape the lows"?

I once heard the statement that the difference between social drinkers and addicts are that social drinkers "drink for the high" rather than what addicts do, which is "drink to escape the lows". (I rephrased it, and I'm unsure where I heard it). I'm not totally sure I agree with this statement. What about you? Does this make sense to you?
If you drink, do you "drink for the high" or to "escape the lows"?

I can honestly say I have done a little of both. I get together with my friends and we drink when we are all stressed out and we just want to chill. Then there are times when we get wasted just to see how wasted we can get..yeah, we got this twisted frat house vibe going on sometimes but we are always in a safe enviroment and nothing bad has happened thank god for that...

oh..whether it is for the highs or lows, a social drinker only drinks on certain occasion or when the people around him like co-workers,friends, etc invited him. it doesnt mean that it has to do with feelings.as long as they drink just for fun or for whatever reason AND IT IS NOT THAT FREQUENT, that person is a social drinker. ^_^

I don't know. I have a lot of friends who go out EVERY night and consider themselves to be "social drinkers" because they drink with their friends (who invite them) and at parties rather than by themselves. I think there's always some kind of emotion attached to drinking.

I feel Drinking is really a addiction and not easy to quit all of sudden. But good thing is there are many rehabilition center for helping to get rid of these habits. to make a great change in life..I dont drink but i helped my friends and few of them quit addiction to drinks
