Because of the awful fires in Australia................

As I read about the devistating fires in Australia, with the number of people who have lost their lives, to say nothing about the huge amount of property loss, I wonder how many other areas are threatened by environment conditions that would make the oppertunity of fires possible. I live in south Texas, on the Gulf Coast, and we are in serious drought conditions. On one side of our property is land that no one lives on, and it is just left to nature. The dead grasses and shrubs would fuel a fire easily. All it would take is a carelessly tossed out cigarette!! My husband got out the tractor and disk, he worked up a strip of land along side of ours, this will at least slow any fire coming from that direction down, we hope. We have hoses and water sprinklers ready. If you are in a threatened area what are you doing to prepare?????

That was the most horrible thing happened in Australia!!! News keep on reporting the last circumstances, and I keep on listening to the radio all the time. I can't imagine what's my reaction if this happened to me. Maybe the first thing is to calm down then search necessity for living. Hope everyone fine! Have a good day!

I, too, can't imagine this happening to me. We have our important papers all sorted into a brief case, along with a bag holding a two week supply of our medications, change of clothes, concentrated food, list of family and how to contact them.

I live up in Austin and we are in the highest fire danger. There are fields just down the street from me in 2 directions. So far, tho, in the 24 years I've lived in the house, there have been no fires in these fields. However, that does mean there is a lot of built up under growth.
