Okay a friend of mine asked me to fix his laptop, but the problem is his O.S. does not accept new installations of new versions of antivirus softwares. So what I'm planning to do is to just scan his laptop with my PC by just connecting them. But I don't know if it is possible with just the lan cards. I don't have any hubs or routers. What should I do?

Yes you can connect the laptop directly from your PC/. Just use the cable and connect both Pc and laptop with each other's LAN card. If any of these hasn't got a LAN card, you can also use Data cable/ Serial Data cable to transfer data. It is odd laptop doesn't allow new version of antivirus installation, check it again, it should allow you to do it

Yes Definetly cross connection cable works with the lan card sharing for pcs. Bust for that you want two lan cards installed in your system no need to have two lancards in other one. and just connect them with cross cable and it will work.

I think it is better to go for router because routers have less complications in installation and can add around three to five computers at a time in a router.

I think it is possible to connect two computers with lan cards. Connect one lan card to the modem and another lan card to another computer. I think you need Windows XP for it. Windows XP is user friendly and helps in connecting computers easily.

Yes it is possible with two lan cards. Use an ethernet crossover cable connection then go to the network setting wizard. Each computer should be configured appropriately. You also mentioned that his OS does not accept new installations, maybe you could try other anti-virus programs that is compatible with his current OS.

You could also use USB via LAN connections. You will need a USB to LAN converter if you have only one LAN card and the other has only USB connection.
