i always get rid of as many items as i bring in so like if i get new pants i find a pair i or hubby no longer wears then i determine if they are in donate able condition for a local clothing center? are they torn and stained and would make a great tote , rug , or rag quilt. i don't usually yard sale

I usually have a garage sale three of four times a year. And i have a booth at the local flea market. I don't work any more so this gives me the chance to get out and meet a lot of different people, and it gets me out in the fresh air. and i make a little on the side. I also watch craigs list some times people post that they need different things and i help out when i can........

I usually just give the things that I don't use anymore, but I do sell some stuff that other people won't accept like the things needed in junk shops.

I actually do all three of those things. Some things, if beyond repair, get pitched. Other things I donate to Salvation Army (like coats, etc), and some things I save for my yard sale. The coats and clothing I figure would really help the homeless more than I could get any real $$ for them, so might as well help somebody along the way that could really use them! If it's a new, or only worn once or twice, clothing item, I'll usually put it in the yard sale, that way I can at least recoup a little on my purchase mistake lol. Lots of other stuff I recycle and refashion into something new. Other things I try and recycle are newspapers, magazines (I donate to a local veterinarians office or the V.A. hospital), glass, tin cans, and plastic. Our school has a newspaper recycler in the yard. Each time it gets filled up and taken by the recycler, the school gets money for books, videos, and other school stuff...so it pays to do that and help the school. The other stuff I mentioned goes to our towns recycler program. It helps the landfills, and also helps our town get some needed extra funds.

Usually i do separate bottles and empty plastic containers in a plastic so i can sell them to the junk shop and earn at least. About old clothes, i do give them away to neighbors or friends and the rest i keep it as a rag for cleaning. Before i used to keep old clothes and do yard sales or garage sales and donate the money to church ministry.

Great recycing is so very important. Kudos to you for your donations but i know what a pain sales can be to have. I am sure your neighbors and friends appreciate your gifts.

I procrastinate on getting rid of things. I make an attempt to recycle used products. I kept two garbage bags full of old clothes for the Salvation Army. The lady there told me, "you have no idea how many bags of clothes we have to throw out. I didn't have the bags on me at the time. To be honest, I threw them away. I was discouraged. When I collect bottles, I try to make a way to recycle them. If I don't have time, I will just disgard them. I had too many chairs in my apartment, and a computer desk that was just taking up space. I gave them to my neighbors on the same floor as me.

I have a feeling the lady at the salvation army just didn't want to deal with them. The real story behind salvation army , American rescue workers , goodwill donations is pretty much all the same. The donations are sorted either at store level or a warehouse somewhere. Yes some clothing is not sent for resale it is sent to a baler where the organization also makes funds from the sale of it as recycled fibers. The same goes for shoes , belts , metal items , books , and furniture. The only clothing or fabric items that they can't utilize are dirty items such as pet hair mud mildewed.
