The term 'social isolation' has been cropping up in conversation and print media in recent days. How can this term be defined? What role does technology play in reducing or enlarging a sense of isolation? ___________ I guess I just wasn't made for these times

Social Isolation, what a oximoran. Kids are playing vedio games instead of getting out and playing with each other. People run around with a cell phone on their ear instead of going to see the person. I think technology is greatly contributing to this and it will get worse Look at where we are right now

but i have confidence that technology has the potential to truly connect us. and that it can get worse, but it can also get better. the people who invented computers (vannever bush era) meant for technology to bring people closer. maybe we can realize that dream. modern technology is really young yet.

WHAT A GREAT QUESTION! I think that there are a lot of "buzzwords" in media these days, and always have been...remember how video games were causing ADD? Maybe there's some validity to that, just like maybe there's some validity to the idea that the increase in technological outlets is causing a greater instance of social isolation. I've seen a lot of people who have just slipped into their own private little online world...in fact, I've done it myself. After a while, though, you start to realize that it's just not as good as it used to be. I believe that as interesting and nice as it may be for a while, it becomes clearer and clearer to you that there's just something more fulfilling about a "real" relationship. Of course, that's not to say that online relationships and spending time online is a bad, bad thing. The internet is a great place to learn things about the world, other people, and yourself, and to network and meet people you might never have the chance to get to know otherwise. The trick is not to let it consume your life. Just like anything else, take it in moderation.
