When did your kids do it?

My 2 1/2 year old is slowly showing that she may be ready to give up her sippy cups. I've been letting her drink a few sips out of a regular cup everyday for about a month now. She's doing pretty good with it but occasionally spills it all over herself or on the floor. I'm ready for her to use big girl cups too. How did you get your kids fully transitioned to big kid cups?

My kids were almost 4 before I let them give up the sippy cup. But I am just talking about the Tupperware ones with the lids. Not because they couldn't handle it but because I hate having to clean up spills. So for my own sanity, they had lids for a long time. My youngest is a little less clutsy then the other two so he got a big boy cup a little sooner. My daughter still spills her milk all the time and she is 12. I hate that because milk is bad for the hardwood floor.

That's what I want to avoid. I hate cleaning up the messes too but I don't want to hold her back when she thinks she's ready. We don't have hardwood so that's not an issue for us.

Under the age of 1 they used baby cups - after that ordinary ones. But they ate by them selves at that age as well.
I've never used much of those stuff since we haven't needed them. It's better to use the things that are already avalible.
My mother in law still gives our 3,5 year old a sippy cup.... it makes me kind of mad - since she has been capable of drinking from a glass for years.

That would make me mad too. If she's already using them she shouldn't help them to regress. Thanks.

That's how she is too. I can only put a couple sips in a regular cup at a time. She still spills it sometimes.

My 2 1/2 year old son uses a regular cup at meals, while sitting at the table, but a sippy cup the rest of the time. I want to get him out of the habit soon, too. I started by giving him a small cup with just a sip or two at a time in it. That kept the spills pretty small until he got better with it, then I gave him more, though still never more than half full.
I think when I am ready to be rid of the sippy cup, I will first make a rule that drinks always stay in the kitchen- he can leave it on the table and come take a sip whenever he is thirsty. Then I will have him only with water whenever he is not sitting at the table, so it isn't too messy or sticky if he does spill. In the car or in the summer when I want to make sure he is drinking plenty, I'll give him a water bottle.
The sippy cups will all just have to disappear so there will be no going back and forth to confuse him or make it harder on him. When I feel he is ready, I'll just get rid of them and be ready to mop up some spills until he is better with the cup.

That sounds like a great plan. Hope you don't mind if I steal your ideas. Good luck to you (and me).

My youngest is almost three and can drink from a normal cup with no problems and has done for months now, she does however have her milk before bed in a sippy cup its like a comfort thing and im happy for her to do that until she wants to give it up same as with her babys bottle she had that for bedtime milk a lot longer than she probably should but when she was ready to give it up it made the transition easier. for me waiting to make ANY transition until the child is ready that is always the best time and the best way to make any big change in their life.

I think mentally she is ready but I'm not ready for the messes. I'll just have to suck it up and let her make a mess I think. I don't want to hold her back from something that she's ready to do.

I got my son used to big kid cups by buying a few cups with characters on them that he liked. Some of the dollar stores have some character cups. I lucked out and found some that had Spiderman on them. At the time, he was really into a show called Lazytown. I told my son that the characters in Lazytown all drink out of big kid cups. I'm not sure whether it was the character cups, or telling him that the characters in that show drink out of big kid cups, but it worked. Best of luck.

The daycare my son goes to starts them on regular cups around 18-24 months. So my son has been at it for a few months now. He does it well at daycare but not good enough at home. It something i will keep working at.

I feel really behind in that case. I can't imagine my daughter using a regular cup that young. She can barely use a regular cup now at 2 1/2 years. You're lucky he can do it at daycare. Good luck at home.
