Do you put off going to the doctor ...?

because you know he's going to tell you something and you don't want to do it?
I have a pain in my right hand between the index knuckle and the middle finger knuckle.
It hurts - a good bit.
I don't want to be told to cut down on my computer because the using the mouse is agrivating it (I already know it is, but I don't want to cut back on using it!)
Now both hands are hurting, it hurts to make fists, but it doesn't particulaly hurt to type, except in that one place and that is mostly when I "mouse."
I don't want to be told to stop, I really want to just have it stop hurting.
so, do you know how to make it stop hurting or would you go to the doctor and know what he's going to suggest?

Are you using a laptop or PC? I used to use a PC and since I've had my laptop, I've no pain at all from the mousing.
And I never go to the doc unless my gut tells me it's really serious and time to face up to the music.

I rather thought so. When I was visiting my mother-in-law just before Xmas, I used my brother-in-law's PC to check my emails and do some searches. That damn mouse had me not only frustrated, but back in the pain zone again as I have arthritis.
I feel for you Elic. Methinks we need a mylot donation drive to get you a laptop! lol

Try using one of those wrist braces for carpel tunnel. It will hold your hand in a position so it won't hurt anymore.

It does make it hard to use the mouse, but it will prevent you hand from getting worse. You might try getting an ergonomic mouse.

I have been having quite a bit of pain in my shoulders for the past month! The doctor told me (without examination)that it was probably osteoarthritis. When I exercise they hurt, when I lift heavy objects, they hurt. I can't even sleep on my side without pain. ~Sigh~ I need to seek medical advise.
Take it from one that doesn't want to go to the doctors...GO! Do as I say and not as I do. LOL!
You go and I'll go. When we get the results we can share our misery with one another.
Big huggers to you.

[b]I'll ditto that (go see doc). I, too, have osteoarthritis, which, until I was diagnosed with it, I'd never heard of. It has crippled my knees, & I have no cartilage left, according to the doc who x-rayed me. The docs say it will eventually get all my joints, big ones first (& maybe only? What have your docs said?).
Elic (former roomie & current--& FOREVER--best bud) takes care of me now, but I fear she's going to be unable to do so, soon. While I can hire another helper, no-one could ever take her place. And I hate it that she's in pain.
So again, the message is--GO SEE THE DOC A.S.A.P.!

Gee whiz, hun. This is my fault.
ATTENTION EVERYONE HERE WHO BELIEVES IN PRAYER:
(1) please pray Elic's body heals, &
(2) please pray I find a job, so I can pay Elic the money I owe her, & she can afford to see the doc when she needs to!
Sincerely,

Well for me it is the seriousness of the inconvenience. If I am ok enough to carry on my everyday activities and just put up with a small amount of pain or discomfort, then I will put it off. But once it becomes a major thing I go to to DR.
I had a hammer toe and it was causing pain, but then it become hard to even walk the length of the mall without pain and then the not being able to sleep at night without balm or meds. That was the point of no return for me. And even though the healing was slow, I can walk for hours now, and that is important to me.

I had a hammer toe, had my former roommate pull it straight - and yes, it hurt like hell when it happened, but the toe was better in days.
my problem with my feet are my heels and the doc doesn't know why they don't heal
yeah, it gets worse I'll probably at the doc, reluctanly

When it comes to going to the doctor I'm like clockwork! If I notice the slight change anywhere on my body then I pay a visit to my local surgery. I would definitely go to the doctor regarding your own condition because it's always best to find out if anything is wrong at an early stage, it might be nothing but it's always good to check. Some people are embarrassed about going to the doctor about certain things and I used to be that way myself but now I just get on down there and check everything out I mean, this is your life we're talking about here! Dont take this wrong but you being a man Andrew, I was surpriused at your response. Most men I know have to be dragged to the dr!!
I am almost that bad myself. I try first to see if it is something I can do to make it be all better before I give in and go to the dr.

I am one of those that don't go to the doctors in fact I have only been to one 6 times in the last 24 years and that was to have our 7 kids. lol In fact I should go now as my back is out again but I wont. I have been so bad that I wasn't able to get out of bed, literally for 3 weeks. Even then I hobbled for a good week or two. I just don't like them at all.
Now I don't have to feel guilty about not going as I no longer have health insurance so I cant go. The kicker is now that I don't have insurance I would probably go for my back as now I have a 2 year old that needs me during the day and so my back isn't getting better.
That being said if there is a chance of them helping you or of it getting worse (like my back) it might be better to get it checked out now, just in case.

I guess I just don't want to start on the specialists until I have the other specialist dealth with - or maybe I can get 2 MRIs done at the price of one... nahhh, ones on the hand and the other on the hip, doubt it.
I have had so many problems over the years, I really suspect they are going to want to send me to PT again, and I don't have $$ for that either.

Sounds like you have what I have, carpal tunnel. I have a brace I wear whenever it acts up. It helps with the pain as well.

Usually it is the thumb where it's felt first but not always. When I first realized I had carpal tunnel, it started in my thumb but then within days my whole hand hurt traveling up my arm. At it's worst, my whole arm went weak for over a month before it started healing. Now either my 2 middle fingers hurt and then travels around my hand or it starts in my thumb again. Depends on how I'm using my hand. Typing doesn't really hurt my thumb but the mouse does. Think it's really the mouse's fault with carpal instead of all the typing.

It just might be as simple as getting some other style of mouse. I have used "mice" that have felt uncomfortable in my hand from the start, and after use, my hand would hurt.

If there's a Freecycle group near you, you might give it a shot... someone may have tried an ergonomic mouse and found they didn't like it.

Yep, so guilty on that score. Let's see, I have blocked ears, that have been that way and getting worse for over 6 months. I now also have something wrong with my central nervous system, oh, and I am due for a pap test!
It takes forever to get a doctors appointment here, and when you get one, there is no guarantee you will get seen at all. I've had them call me on my mobile while I was sitting in the waiting room to say that they had to close early and were going to have to reschedule my appointment for 6 weeks time! Needless to say, I still haven't gone back, though I really need to.
You should get a touch pad to use for a while. They just plug into a usb port and are flat so you decide how your hands use it. They are pretty good.

the good news is that they found arthritis, the bad news is... they found arthritis, the doc said he knew I wasn't going to stop using the computer or crafting, so he told me to do a month of anti-inflamitories, well I quit after a month and started right back up, still hurt.

There are some exercises you can do that will help. Invest in one of those stress balls, because they are supposed to be really good. Your cats should be good too! Stroking them helps to move the hands in a different manner, so your hands don't get used to being in a certain position.

I personally put off going to the doctor because it's just such a hassle to go. I hate the hanging around, only to be told either something which (like you!) I already know, or that s/he can't provide a diagnosis. I don't think I've been to the doctor since my last pregnancy, and I only went then because I wanted access to the hospital scans.
With your hand pains, I'd advise keeping them as warm as possible. Your pains sound quite similar to the ones I get, only mine have now spread to my wrists and are worse if I do any sort of repetitive manual work like raking. I have wrist supports with metal inserts for when they get really bad, but I've started wearing 'tramp's gloves' at home when it's chilly and those do seem to help. In case you don't know what I mean, they're like woolly tubes which cover my wrists and up to the middle joint of my fingers, with a slit for the thumb to stick through to hold them in place. They allow me full use of my hands, whilst keeping the bits which suffer from stiffness and soreness warm.

Hi Elic,
I think you should really go to the doctors, he maybe able to give you something to ease your pain, don't think he will tell you to give up your computer.

I go to the doctor when I have to, but at first I try tylenol and stuff like that, go to the pharmacist for a pain killer, it could be arthritis, if it is doesn't stop after than then you will have to see a doctor.

It's no fun to be in pain - I sure hope your hand gets better soon. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2007 by my previous doctor. My current doctor does not respect this particular doc so does not believe that I have fibro. So, I don't go to her with any of my fibro problems. I do go for annual woman-type checkups & mammograms because I think that's the right thing to do. I don't like it though. Otherwise I will only go if I feel really, really sick & don't see any sign that I am getting better. I absolutely hate going to the doctor - blood pressure shoots up, heart rate is high, etc. Luckily the doc appreciates this & doesn't push BP meds. I don't trust docs much because I have had bad experiences with them in the past. I always try to deal with it first on my own & do some research on the internet. My advice with your hand is to apply heat as often as possible. Your cat seems to help out but I use a sock with uncooked rice in it (tie up the sock), throw it in the microwave for 45-50 seconds & apply it to the affected area. It feels great. Your hand could probably use a little rest too. Hang in there & I sure hope you feel better soon!

No, I try to go and get myself checked out. Anything abnormal concerns me. I hope that you can find some treatment for your hand. I am very sorry that you are having problems with your right hand. I know that you may not want to go to the doctor, but this will be the best thing to do. You don't want to wait too long. Your condition may get worse. I hope that you go so that you can get some healing. I really hope that you will feel better very soon. Take care!
