Do you work out at home?

I love to work out in the privacy of my own home! I have been working out this way for many years now after finally giving up my gym membership vecause it was just too darn expensive. I also did not like having to drive somewhere, change there, then drive home after, etc... Recently, though a few friends have asked me to join a really inexpensive gym, and I was thinking about it. What do you think of working out at home versus a gym? I know that some people reaally need the support of others when they are working out, so let me know what you think!

I'd rather work out at home. I have a treadmill, a row machine, and some other things. I feel more comfy at home and the twenty mins I would spend driving there i could work out more.

I so know! I think it is kind of a waste of the time that I want to spend working out if I have to drive to do it! If I had a gym REALLY close by I would maybe try it, but I have some equipment, too, and I like doing DVD's! Thanks for the comment!

Your kind of work out might just not be her kind of workout! (Teehee) Maybe your friend just likes dancing about in her room, and not slinging horse crap? Haha!

I never work out, well, not on purpose! Having a farm is just like having a home gym, lots of lifting (hay & feed), swinging and slinging (manure) to be done every day. I often wonder why my best friend never comes to work out with me though...

I hate going to the gym. People watch me and i get embarrassed easily sometimes. I feel better in the comfort of my own home but have a hard time pushing myself when at home. So i am considering buying a wii system to help me get some work out done. I heard its effective. Plus the bonus is its fun.

I recently saw an article that said that even though the Wii Fit is flying off the shelves (I don't have one, but it looks cool), that people are treating it as any other piece of exercise equiment after a few months, and they aren't using it. I think it looks really cool, but somewhat limiting, too. You would probably get bored working out on it. I would try it though if I had a lot of money to blow!

I have a Wii, but I want to get the Wii fit, I have heard it is a really great workout! I have to wait until we finish up our basement renos, then we can move everything downstairs and have a full workout room.

I love working out and do so at home. I cannot afford a gym membership right now, and I don't have the time to invest in going right now either. It is easier though because once you are at the gym you work out. Once you get home, its harder because you can easily get caught up in other things or interrupted. You must have a lot of discipline to get home and dedicate the time to working out. I will usually start by going for a brisk walk to warm up and I won't take my phone so no one bothers me. Then when I'm warm, I'll get home and do the rest.

A gym is definately free of mundane distractions, so I see your point. I don't bring my phone around me either once I'm working out. I couldn't talk anyway!

To be extremely honest with you, I have an elliptical machine and a weight machine downstairs in my basement (the weight machine is similar to a bowflex, but a cheaper model). I have had my elliptical for over 10 years and don't use it often enough. I usually plan to work out after dinner, but by the time I get home (usually around 6 p.m.) from work, make dinner, get the kids to bed, etc., I am bagged. It takes a huge amount of effort to get down those stairs and use the equipment. Someday I will incorporate it into my routine. My husband and I used to have a gym membership before we had kids. We went 3 - 4 times per week and were committed to it. The problem with going to the gym is usually having to wait to use the equipment because other people are already using it, or people not wiping the equipment off after they have sweated all over it (ewwww). A lot of people just went there to stare at other people. Those girls in their tight spandex and make up pissed me off. It's not a fashion show, its a place to exercise!!! Anyways, I think it's great to work out at home on your own schedule, but you just have to commit to git er done! That's my whole problem.

I think it is hard to get back to a routine once you've let it go for a while. We also had a Bowflex and a weight bench that never got used, and we still have a treadmill that only my daughter uses. I got back to working out by switching what I was doing, so that I would be interested in exercise again. Now I pretty much just do different DVD.s and I also get OnDemand TV, which has loads of FREE exercises, so that I don't get bored. I alos only work out 4-5 times a week for about 1/2 hour at a time, so I don't kill myself, but I have seen results. Thanks for the long response!

I actually work out at home and the gym. I go to the gym for the benchpress, squats and any other machinery. I do all my pushups and stuff at home because I just don't like doing that kind of stuff infront of loads of people because in my gym all the mats and stuff are placed to the side where all the bikes are.

i like to work out at home - it's much more private and i feel i can focus on my workout more than when i'm at the gym. i also tend to work out much longer when i'm at home, and i'm not really sure why that is. something about the gym just makes me feel like i need to keep moving from machine to machine, then wrap up and leave. there are some days that i prefer the gym, however, mainly because of the 100% health and wellness atmosphere. it's also nice to have the option of so many cardio and weight machines, which i unfortunately don't have the luxury of using at home!

I have always been an active and outdoors kind of person but for about a year now I have begun working out at home with a program of my own. I would love to go to the gym and be able to use all the different machines but I can't really afford a membership or rather I probably could but I live in a rural area and it would be very inconvenient to commute. So far I have only been doing push-ups and calisthenics. I have a garage I am going to use to set up a workout area. I am going to put up a bar for chin ups later today and I really want to get a weight bench. I saw one at overstock.com I really wanted. It was more like a workout station and cost around $750.00, so needless to say I won't be getting it anytime soon. I find that if you are serious about working out you can do so from home almost as well as you can at the gym. You may not have all the nice weight machines to use but there are plenty of exercises you can do to target the same muscles without the weight machines. You can go here for work out tips: http://www.responsivehealth.com/Children-Fitness.aspx?EMID=1607347 The only time I really miss the support of someone else is if I would be at the weight bench. If you are going to press near your limit then you need someone to spot for you. You just have to use lower weight and don't extend yourself too far if you are alone. I also find that the right music can be a good motivator. I really miss the different weight machines from a gym but if I can set up my own little work out station at home and be just as satisfied and have the convenience and comfort of being at home.

Well I personally just started working out at home, I hate going to the gym. I guess part of the reason is because I feel like all the skinny people there are judging me. I started working out at home with my kids and I have say that I get a better work out. I used to joke that lifing my laundry hamper up and down the stairs was all the excersise that I needed but I have started to do more running, sit ups and what not. i find that since I am more comfortable at home, I am able to push myself further and the great thing about working out at home is the fact that I have a shower all to myself, without having to hurry for the next person.

I like the gym for some reason. I feel like a *grown up* when I go to the gym - as I'd work out next to a bunch of professional, adult, strangers. I used to go to a really expensive gym (until I realized I couldn't afford it any longer, of course..) And I really just felt like I was *part of* something. I also liked that there was variety in what I could do there; I could swim, I could go in the sauna, I could work out on one of the million machines they have, I could weight train, I could do yoga, play raquetball, basketball, and so on. There are so many options when you go to a gym! Unlike in my house (where I have ONE stationary bike in front of the TV), I had options and could get plenty of variety when I worked out there. I went with a friend to HER (inexpensive) local gym, and I didn't like it at all. There were a lot of scumbags there, who kept hitting on us as we tried to work out (I do live in a big city, so I guess this is understandable), but we felt REALLY uncomfortable and ended up just leaving without getting very much accomplished. What I DO like is "working out" outdoors, in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Running, walking, and biking around local lakes and on trails is, to me, the BEST way to experience nature & burn some calories while doing it!

I've got a treadmill machine that collects dust because I seldom use it. I guess I do not have the discipline to devote time working out. But anyways, I play tennis which compensate to my not working out.

Hello ljbinkop! I also work out at home. I could probably afford a gym membership if I wanted to, but I would rather use that money for other things currently, plus I'm probably at least 20 minutes from the closest gym, so that's a lot of time tacked on for traveling. A few advantages I see of joining a gym are that you are able to use a bunch of different equipment that you couldn't have at home, there's tons of variety, you have people to socialize with, if wanted, etc. I'm happy working out at home, though. We (hubby and I) have a Wii Fit (tons of fun!) and free weights. A few days ago, we got an exercise bike. I figured if I'm going to be watching TV, I might as well be doing something at the same time :) We live right between 2 lakes and the smaller one has a 1.5 mile path around that we'll go walking around, as well.

This is definitely something that I like to do! I have never been a member of a gym, I find that they are quite expensive and I also love to work out in my own private setting. Over the years I have purchased several machines from best direct and I am pleased with the results they have given me. I don't find working out at home that difficult as I am quite self-motivated. I don't think I will ever become part of a gym in the future. If you like the gym and you are happy to return there, especially if it is not that expensive then you should do it. I am quite self-concious too so this doesn't help. Anyway, good luck. Andrew

hello ljbinkop about the only kind of workout that i get is when the weather is warm outside and when it is, i go to a nearby track to walk around. by the end of the summer time, i have worked myself up to eight or nine times around the track each afternoon. when it is really hot outside, i wait until seven o'clock or so to walk when it starts to cool off some and the sun isn't blazing hot. but i hear ya about the expense of a gym membership, my brother used to be a member at some local gym here in town several years ago and that is why that he had to quit attending his workouts as well is because he couldn't afford to keep going to the gym. and i would rather workout at home anyday than go to the gym. take care and have a beautiful afternoon.

I've never worked out at a local gym. I use to have to go to a work-out room in highschool when I took gym. I didn't like it so much because it made me feel self-concious. I felt as though people were staring at me. I did work out for a bit at home, which I did enjoy quite a bit.

I believe there are positives and negatives to going to the gym. I've never had a gym membership before, but have checked them out, and they are just too expensive for me. I'm self-motivated enough to keep working out and/or running around home to really need a gym membership. I can form a full body workout at home with the limited equipment I have, but if I wanted to really gain strength I think a gym would be my best bet. I just don't have the room or money for an expensive weight bench! Really, I think the need for motivation from others is up to you! Time spent exercising is great time to spend with a friend. They can challenge you and help you.
