Would you like to have some pizza with your salt? Just reading in the Canadian Stroke Network that;
2 slices of Pizza Huts Pepperoni Lovers pizza...has 3000mg of sodium, that's double the daily recommended intake for adults.
2 slices of Boston Pizza's Rustic Italian ... has 2580 mg of salt
1 slice, YES, 1 slice of Pizza Pizza"s meat supreme is 2400 mg of salt!
The guidelines are 1100 to 1500 mg adequate daily intake for adults!
What are we doing to ourselves? A high-sodium diet increases blood pressure which in turn increases the risk for heart disease, strokes kidney disease and dementia!
The extreme amount of sodium comes from the meats on the pizza, be it pepperoni, salami, bacon, ham..turkey...because they are all processed with nitrosamines & nitrosalines which are the preservatives! That includes the meats in "sub" sandwiches, too!
Just another reason for me to avoid Fast Foods, but hoping all who do enjoy it take into considering what you are feeding your children! How often do you eat Salt...with your Pizza?

Are you sure about that?
Seem to me that if I was eating one slice of pizza with 2400 mg of salt... I would know about it... because I would not be able to eat it.
One teaspoon of salt is barely 100 mg.
So you are telling us that there are 24 teaspoons of salt on one slice of pizza.

Well... I was responding to...
1 slice, YES, 1 slice of Pizza Pizza"s meat supreme is 2400 mg of salt!
I did a rough estimate by putting a teaspoon of salt on my kitchen's scale... which is not very accurate for such a small quantity.
But now... my question would be...
Does "Nitrosalines/samines" has the same effect on the human organism as pure raw salt?
It is probably wrong to blame the pizzas for this.
The salt is in the pepperoni... not in the pizza.
If you bought some pepperoni or salami... you would get that same dosage. And you can taste the salt in it.
In general... people love spicy food and go out of their way to buy salty food.
We know it is bad for us... but we don't care.
Just like smokers know that smoking is bad for you... but they still do it.
Food is an addiction like everything else.

I think if you will note, in my original discussion, my dear Aussies2007, that for the purpose of this study...it reads; 2 (TWO) slices of each kind of the pizza's mentioned, which was also noted that persons normally ingest 2 slices when indulging!
And I think that you already know the answer to nitrosamines/salines and their effects!
I have for a long time, avoided processed meats...such as pepperoni, salami, ham, bacon for it's curing process with the above chemicals. And, yes, it is NOT the pizza, but for this discusssion/report pizza's were used because is there not only salts in the meats, but the tomato sauce & cheese, as well! Your salt consumption would be very high in subs with these meats, too!

I have thoroughly searched and can't find where you are estimating 1 tsp salt is 100mg....but, as I stated above, you are thinking that you should be tasting that much salt! Nitrosalines/samines are used in the curing of the meats, it is in the tomato sauce and in the cheese and not a detectable taste! Once again, it is the hidden salts, that we are not aware of; so have included a couple of links; www.iom.edu and www.eatwell.gov.uk...and my site advisor says they are both safe!
Speaking of safe, I think of all of you hourly...and pray that soon, your fires & flooding will abate...and that YOU are safe!

I like salt. I live with my brother who is a cardiologist and there is hardly any salt in the food that's prepared everyday. Needless to say, I'm not enjoying my food although my body is probably healthier. I'd much rather have my salt. Cheers!!

I truly think that you will thank your brother in the long run! LOL! And, truly, you know what you are ingesting, when meals are prepared at home! Are there spices that you like, so that you can perk up your foods that way? Do you sneak into your bedroom....and chomp down a bag of chips? Sounds dangerously fun...and I am sure the quantity you eat even if you would...would be of no real consequence! I am just amazed a the number of persons that have these prepared foods so often! Thank you for responding...and have a great evening!

I was joking...you were saying that you missed salt! I am with you on chips! And bananas, fruit is very expensive, it took a great leap when the price of fuel went so high, and hasn't come down!

Sorry to disappoint you but I don't chomp down a bag of chips, I never liked the stuff. I don't eat in my bedroom. In fact, I eat very little at all. Bananas every day if I can have it.

Good on you....I have been reading a lot about salt...and it's amazing that it is even in chocolate! Hidden findings! People seem to under the impression, that it is NOT salty, if it doesn't taste salty....but just reading thru the sites that I posted on Aussie2007's reply...amazing where we find it!
Is your weather beginning to abate? We just had another dump of snow on Tuesday, and to add insult, my truck decided to break down about 7 miles from home...we do not have public transport (nor taxiis) here...so a long cold trek home, especially with my hip just recovering....and I think the entire population of this Island was snuggled in at home...nary a vehicle on the road! I'm really beginning to hate winter!

I should stack a great amount of pizzas to my mum. My dad does not need salt in his diet because of his high blood pressure, while she has low blood pressure. So she does not add salt to her food intake. Anyway you already know what happened to her. I hope that she takes better care of her health. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We should be more attentive to what we are eating.

I think the reason that pizzas got mixed up in this research was because that is how most processed meats are consumed...but it would also hold true if you were eating a lot of "sub" sandwiches, eg., with meats preserved with nitrosalines/samines! Thanks for responding....nice to hear from you!

I love my pizza without meat. My favorite toppings are mushrooms and onions. Sometimes I'll have broccoli and oniors or mushrooms. There is already cheese on the pizza, so there is already protein. Really don't need meat on the pizza. Now that I have high blood pressure, I don't eat meat on a pizza at all. When I was younger, I used to order a Hawaiian pizza. That had ham and pineapple. I used to drink a ton of water afterward. There are some great garlic sause pizzas if you can find a place that doesn't add a ton of salt or high salt cheese to the sause.
I don't have children, but I do have a husband. He used to work in Saudi Arabia in the military and he works his tail off constructing subway cars now in the USA. He tried a low salt diet (ate the stuff I was eating) and his blood pressure dropped like a rock. The Dr. told him to go back to eating like he used to. So I make low salt for me and he adds salt. When we go out to eat, he gets hamburger on his pizza because the sausage makes the pizza swim in fat and he can't handle that, he sometimes gets pepperoni instead. Different "strokes" for different folks. It's good that you help people to think about it because someone could do serious damage that does have high blood pressure or kidney trouble. Very good and thoughtful topic!

Oh boy, you got me there! I love ham/pineapple pizza, but at home I always open another can of pineapple to go with it! But that's about once every 6 months, as there is no take out here! So we do homemade, when we want pizza...just not as easy as opening a frozen package! I think I told you before, but our most common home-made pizza is German Pan Pizza, and it is made with lean ground round!
Amazing isn't it...how differently each of our bodies process that which we ingest! You eat the same diet, as your significant other..he's fine, you have elevated BP!
In our paramedics courses, heat illnesses, had a serious dedicated session, as they are a illness, that they signs & symptoms can be misinterpreted! It was interesting to learn, that combat troups that worked in extreme heat areas, like your husband, originally took salt tablets..to retain fluids/fluid levels, but after serious kidney problems, switched to a hypotonic solution of salt dissolved in water, as the tablets were not dissolving properly, and were attracted to & settled in the kidneys creating serious kidney damage! Nowadays heat stress is a mild hypotonic solution, to a strong for heat stroke, with other cooling proceedures...so salt is definitely a requirement of the body, but normally there is enough in the veggies we eat! Cheers, my dear, nice chatting with you!

I have a recipe for a simple crust, that you can make with whole wheat flour! Most often a home we have a "German Pan Pizza" and that is made with a crust of grated potatoes...and it's quite simple, if you don't want to go thru the process of making the dough! Can PM you the recipe if you like!

Continue to enjoy your pizza, but eliminate the processed meats on it! Chicken should be great, as long as it is not the processed chicken..like chicken roll! Remember that there is also salts in the cheese, bbq sauce and tomato sauce! Or if you are eating pizza regularly...make that your only salt intake, by eating fruits & high potassium foods that day!

Hi pregammano
So much salt hidden in a slice of pizza! We are unable to feel that excess salt. That may be due to its taste, flavor or the food additives used.
It is better if you can reduce salt consumption atleast by 50%.
What you should do for it?
You don't eat outside. If you have to eat,ask for salt less dishes.
At home season your food with spices rather than salt.
Don't keep salt container on the dinning table.
We are eating salty food by habit only.We can change it now.
Let us eat less processed, packaged foods to reduce our salt intake.
Read the label on the food pockets. If salt is a major ingredient(listed with in top four)avoid that food or eat less.
Do we like to suffer from high BP,strokes and kidney diseases?NOThen why to invite them by eating more salt? Then let us reduce our consumption of salt to the safer level.
Happy Mylotting.

You are so right, in all you say....and I guess my point here is just another reason I do NOT consume Fast Foods! Like you, all is home cooking..and can control my intake! Thank you for responding!
