Do we sleep too Much.

An average day consits of, for most of us 8 hours working 8 hours to ourselves 8 hours sleeping So that means we spend one third of our lives asleep. that seems such a waste of time and life. If for example someone lived to be 60 they would have slept 20 years of their life! Does that seem a waste of 20 years of your life or do you like to sleep your life away? I always feel when I sleep that i am missing something. What is your thoughts.

Personally, i love to sleep for long hours. Actually, sleeping is not a waste of time. It is something essential to us. If we don't get enough sleep we can get sick. It is much a waste of time if we are lying in bed because we are sick. Actually, eight hours is the ideal number of hours for sleep. OK, if we exceed 8 hours of sleep that is already a waste of time.

Hi 00BleedingShadow00. Excellent point. I never thought of that, getting ill due to lack of sleep and then having to spend more time in bed.

Well I like sleeping because I have fun vivid dreams. It may seem like a waste of time, but I think it is essential for our well being. If we didn't get all the sleep we needed we would be sick more often and wouldn't be able to function well during the time we are actually awake. So yea, I think its a waste of time, but it is a necessary waste of time.

Hi loveyevi. I think you might be right it could be right as it being a necessary waste of time. To all who read this, the first line of the post should be... An average day consists of, for most of us. Damn my typos

Someone told me this before. He said that it makes no difference if a guy lives til 112 yet sleeps everyday versus someone who never sleeps and lives until 60. I think people are more refreshed and (some)happy when they have a good rest so I think it makes a difference in the quality of life. I enjoy resting.

Do you agree? Quality versus quantity. Or do you perform the same even if you lack sleep? I told this to him and he said it's another fun challenge to try to stay awake.

Thats right. There is more to that actually. if we also add time we spent in shower, toilet, etc then the total left time is very little. That means our nearly 3/4 time is spent in sleeping, toilet, shower, etc leaving 1/4 time to spend on ourselves.

A sound sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. Anyway, in normal conditions, we must not sleep for more than 8 hours or less than 6 hours in 24 hours! Thanks and have a nice day!

I sleep on the average 8 hours a day. Actually I am a little afraid of sleep, because of the back pain, which hurts most when I get up in the morning. I put off my sleep until very late at night, and as i am retired i have a natural wake up, also late in the morning. Too much sleep makes one dizzy and even for the sick it is better to get up and have a walk around to gather yourself. Pure reliance on medication is no good. Only exercises and activities, both physical and mental can boost our immunity.

Sorry to hear about your back pain, I can understand why you put off sleeping and I agree being able to wake up naturally is much better for you. If sleep is a problem I also agree it can be bad to rely on medication.

I am lucky to get 6 hours of sleep at night right now, I would love to get 8..LOL, but my daughter is teething, and I think she thinks she is missing something when sleeping so she fights it... my son is the opposite, he is on the go but once he is in bed for 10 minutes he is out and snoring...LOL --some nights I could use more sleep. happy mylotting.

The Point you state is a kinda valid, but sleep is very important for our mental and physical health. if it bothers you that much you can only sleep for 6 hours. personally I sleep 12 hours at weekends and between 3-8 hours at week days. but I NEVER feel like I am wasting anything while sleeping, it's a time well spent. What can i say I love my sleeping -_- , Happy mylotting

I very rarely sleep 8 hours or more and I do agree it is important for our health. But I do also find sleep can be an enemy, when I have so much to do.

8 Hours of sleep is for a healthy way of living, specially for kids and teenagers, that will rest their bodies, so they can learn easier and grow healthy. I believe that's all we want so...No, 8 hours is not a lot.

Sleep is a very important part of having a healthy body and mind. If you don't sleep you short your self on recovery time. It's like using a battery and then only doing a partial recharge. The battery doesn't last nearly as long as it will when given full recharges.

That is true the body does need time to recharge just like a battery, we will last longer. Very well said.

I like sleeping...I don't think of it as a waste of time, because without it we may not live for long...it's like we're recharging our body to prepare for the next day and give it a rest...I wish I could sleep more coz I am only sleeping for 6 1/2-7 hrs. lately...

I wish I could get 8 hours of sleep a night. I get on average about 2 a night. My 18 month old daughter really hate's sleeping and likes to be up all the time. I guess I've been on the opposite end of this, that's probably why i feel so much older than I am, lol.. because I'm spending so much time awake!

I feel for you, 2 hours is not much but you have your priorities right, taking care of your daughter That is a trait of a good mother, putting your babies needs before your own.

It may be that we are sleeping too much if indeed you are getting a full eight hours a night, but I honestly don't know one single person who gets regular sleep like that! I would love to sleep a full eight, but I feel lucky when I get in six. That's what I usually sleep a night to be honest, and I think it's about right for me. As far as your questions goes phylisophically (sp!) speaking, I don't think sleeping away one third of our lives is bad because the body needs to sleep to continue! It rebuilds when it sleeps, hence lengthening life, not wasting it.

hey..sleeping is a gift...our brain needs rest to perform efficiently...it rests only when we sleep....thus for a proper functioning of our brain an avg of 6-8 hr sleep is necessary
