Do you use your religion as an excuse to hate gay people?

Who else is tired of people useing their religion to excuse thier hatred of gay people?
Whether you accept gay people or not has nothing to do with religion.. it has to deal with you as a person. It has to do with your capacity for compassion and your ability to love everyone, regardless of how you think they should live their lives.
Jesus loved everyone. Even the people who tortured him and left him to die on the cross. He loved them so much that he asked God to forgive them.
Do you have that kind of love inside you?Or would you rather play God and be the judge of your fellow man?I say this because all the true Christians I know love gays and lesbians as much as they love their family. If you shun someone just because of who they love, then you missed the message of Jesus Christ. If you want to be like him, you have to let go of your own hatred, and let yourself be ruled by love.
So are you the kind of person who loves unconditionaly? Or would you rather cast out your fellow man because of petty differances?
God is the only one who can judge someones true worth. And he dosent need any help from you to make that judgment.

People that blame God or Jesus for their bigoted, biased opinions just irritate me. Trying to reason with those sorts of people is a complete waste of time....they are also very pigheaded and trying to drill common sense into them will only result in getting yourself worked up. I feel sorry for them and pray that they don't have children who are gay. The emotional damage to the gay children of these types of people is severe.

Lets reword the question, do you use your religion to hate adulterers? In the time of Jesus this was punishable by stoning. Jesus saved the woman adulterer by not judging her. He did however, command her to go and sin no more, making a clear distinction between act and person. Judging the former not the later.
Therefore, if it is held, that homosexuality is a sin, then it would be consistent with Jesus to regard the act as wrong without judging the individuals.

I have to agree with you on this, But I have a question,
They supposedly "Found this woman in the act", According to Jewish Law, both the man and woman were to be brought before together for sentencing, Why was only the woman brought?

Honestly Urban, all I am saying here is that it seems to me that if someone has a personal problem with homosexuals; be it dislike, confussion, or perhaps had a bad experience with a homosexual that led them to dislike all as whole, it seems to me that useing religion as an excuse to perpetuate their hatred is easier than taking on the personal responsibilty of just admitting they dont like gay people because of the simple fact that they are gay.
Many people cite their religion as their core objection to homosexuality. When, in reality, religion has nothing to do with it. There are many Christians who have made me feel welcome and invited. They have never made me feel less of a person simply because I have fallen in love with another man.
Yet just the other day right here on MyLot someone said, I quote, that all homosexuals will burn in hell. This person said this in an almost gleefull tone.
That dosent seem very Christian to me.

Yes, Jesus loved everyone. However, He also told us that if people chose to sin and refused to repent, we shouldn't associate with them.
I don't agree with the gay lifestyle, and it was definitely frowned upon in the Bible, but I have had a number of gay friends over the years and have admired their abilities, kindnesses, etc.

I dont recall Jesus turning his back on ANYONE. Is that what you think it means to be Christian? If someone is gay, turn them away and dont associate with them?
Again, you are useing your religion to defend your dislike for gay people. The fact that you say you have had "gay friends" does not let you off the hook as far as I'm concerned. You have obviously learned nothing from them, as well as nothing from Jesus Christs example.

Hey, take it easy.
IMO some people honestly believe that homosexuality is a sin, rather than harboring any sort of deep seated dislike of gay people. I blame misinformation.

I wanna be a witch. Wanna hate me now instead? Anyone? Huh?
Didn't think so.

Yes they do, Olive, it is called Wicca. Wicca is the formal structured religion, per say. But not all witches are Wiccan. I'm learning.
I only take offense to those who use their religion as a basis to hate, like Tee said. Otherwise, I have respect for all religious beliefs as should everyone. It is only fair.
Blessings.

I think that homosexuality is icky to a lot of people, whether they are religious or not. My mom is an atheist, yet she thinks that gay people are unnatural and perverted. Of course it's much easier to not own up to your personal feelings and opinions about others if you can hide behind a bible. You don't -really- hate gays but since God says that they're an abomination it is your duty as a good, loving Christian to constantly remind them that they're disgusting and immoral and that they'll go to hell if they don't repent for their gay lifestyle. Not every Christian thinks like this, but chances are that people who has this kind of attitude would still hate gay people if they didn't have a religion. Still, there are people who are good at heart who genuinely believe that homosexuality is wrong. It's possible for someone to be kind and loving, and still personally believe that homosexuality is wrong.

I agree. Unfortunatly if someone has an irrational fear or personal hatred for a particular group of people, its all to easy to put the blam of their religion, rather than taking personal responsibility and just admit that they themselves have a predjudice.
The current state of religious tensions evident in the world today is another perfect example of useing ones religion as an excuse to act our against other human beings.
Our differences dont need to divide us. But its sad that all to often, they do... and religion is used as the excuse.

I partly agree with you two.
Just take a peek on what other religions are saying/teaching. I know a certain religion and a Christian sect that teaches/promotes pure discrimination. Their members hate or are harsh to other groups because that's what their religion/sect teaches them. It's unthinkable but it's true.

Hi Tee, Thanks for a great discussion and I love what you say here. All true Christians love gays and Lesbians is a correct statement, but many of those who think of themselves as the only real Christians can't understand that. I'm sure that many will tell you that Christ hates sin but loves the sinner and that they are the same. Don't believe them, it is nothing but nonsense and they are not followers of Christ, they pay more attention to the teachings of Paul and what's written in the book of Revelations than they do to the teachings of Jesus. I'm not sure how much you know about the Bible but Revelation is the last book in the Bible and should never have been included there at all. The greatest Biblical scholars can't understand it, yet someone who has a couple of years at a Bible college pretends to know all about it. They will also tell you that homosexuality is a sin but Jesus never condemned it and it was as commonplace than as now. As you say unconditional love is the only true love, it is what Jesus taught. If Jesus Christ were to return to the earth today in human form and teach as he did 2000 years ago, fundamentalists would be the first to reject him. Christianity is a religion about love but many use it as any excuse to hate those that they don't agree with. Sorry for making this so long, sometimes I just get carried away. Blessings.

You are correct! It was the real message that Jesus gave us, to love one another as we want to be loved! AS Jesus loved everyone, even his enemies. How in the world did Jesus have enemies? It is simple, as Jesus did not agree with everyone he met! The Elders thought Jesus should respect them and honor them, but Jesus knew they were full of themselves! And that is still the way of the "religious" people who scorn others while praising themselves! There are plenty of churchgoers who think they are perfect and everyone else is evil. I love everyone, although it is tough to love those who are pointing fingers at everyone else every minute of the day.

Beautifully stated. My mother is a lesbian and at the time I was attending Catholic school, her partner was teaching in the Catholic school system. While the Catholic faith continues to condemn gays, let's all consider what is the reality. The Church is making a stand on fear and hatred where we as simple people are not to judge. No faith tells us to hate another and it is only irrational, fundamentalist beliefs that lead us astray. Ours is to excercise tolerance and understanding for one another, to extend peace and compassion, not hatred. Hate has no place in religion and anyone using religion as an excuse to hate is simply afraid and unevolved. Thank you for your perspective.

You dont have to understand it. I can tell you that personaly, I have never imagined myself being involved romanticly with a female. I am an intelligent, attractive young man. I have had many offers, and many girls have been dissapointed in the fact that I am not interested in them... so please dont think I go with man because I cant get a girl. Nothing is further from the truth.
As far as you saying "WTF?" I'm guessing that means you dont understand why gay people are attrected to their own gender.
I dont have an answer for you. It just is. I am not saying there is a gay gene, or any of that guess work. All I am saying is that there was never a point in my life that I doubted my attraction for the male gender, and repulsed by the thought of being with a female.
It may seem odd to you. But that is my honest answer.
If you are so inclined to believe in God, then you probably agree that God has a plan for everyone. You probably also know that it is not up to we as humans to understand that plan. Just live your own life... I will do that same.
