If you are against polygamy, why?

Most of my friends (and I) are very much pro-gay marriage. At least a significant portion of America agrees with civil unions and equal rights for GLBT people. But I don't know very many people who are pro-polygamy, or multiple spousal rights. I am not for polygamy, but I am not really against it. I wonder why polygamy is so taboo, as it is a personal choice. I imagine many people disagree with it for religious reasons, so is there anybody out there who disagrees with it for non-religious reasons? Are there any polygamy supporters here? Why are you for/against polygamy?
When I say polygamy, I mean marriage to more than one person....I don't mean polyamory...that is a different discussion.I'm also not talking about bigamy, as bigamy is a term often used in a different context, although it is almost synonymous....
