What makes you like a band?

I've been a musician for a long time and it seems with todays digital age, music is readily available to anyone who looks for it. My question to you is what captures you when you listen to a song for a first time? Is it the melody, lyrical content, mood?
Personally for me, something about the music has to be unique and usually that grabs my attention. Then if the content and mood fit my current situation, I might get into the music and the band more. What about you?

Echoru,
Thanks for the response. A lot of music is based on melody which provokes mood. Major scales happy, minor scales sad etc. There are certain chord proggressions that are known scientifically to provoke your emotions. Many bands have used it including Green Day, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Muse, etc.

I like all kinds of music. I like music that isn't always original that you can dance to, I like music that expresses emotions I can relate to, I like music with political messages in the lyrics, and so on. I like music that makes me think, music that's different from anything else.
I think, for me, it's the combination of meoldy, content, and mood that really catches my attention.

Hey Maezee, thanks for the response. Just out of curiosity, since I am studying this stuff, what is your age range? (I dont want to ask directly how old you are since that would be rude) and how many CD's have you bought in your lifetime? On the other hand, how many digital downloads have you bought over the years? What is your main source for new music? Let me know and I might even make a discussion out of it.
