How honest can you be online?

I know that there are a lot of people who are so honest and open that no matter who they are or how long they've known the person they'll give out their name. I am a little less careless with that then some people. In fact, I know a few people on here know my first name, one being my fiance of course, but I am not one to go willy nillying with my name.
Then there's the fact of honesty when it comes to discussion. Have you ever started a discussion and then it went over your head? I have! I'll be honest in saying I am good at thinking up discussions of things I know about, but when it comes to age, rank, and serial number of it all, nope I'll back down.
So how are you with honesty?

Hey,
Iam quite honest online. I mean i dont lie here. If there is a discussion abt age etc i dont find it uncomfortable to respond. I mean whats wrong with that. I also ensure that i dont share my personal details with any one. I draw a line what shd i share and what i shouldn't. I never ask too many persoanl questions and i dont answer personal questions as well. Its really about what the person has asked.
Cheers,
Tutul

I am glad that you are proud of your name. In America people are sometimes reluctant on giving their name because they do not like it. Then again, this is also true at first and then people later grow to like their name.

I understand what you mean about sharing some and then not others. The thing about age, rank and serial number was just a little quip, and I actually meant name, but lol... I do appreciate the response.

I don't always say everything on my mind, but when I do it's fairly honest.
I do feel more comfortable being honest online, and actually speaking my mind.
It's easier when I don't personally know the people I'm speaking with.
Or if my identity is anonymous,
It's a good way to get stuff out freely, and not worry if someone you know will read it and assume things.

I am weigh too open and honest. That is what I think lands me into big trouble.. I don't like to give out too much of my personal infomation. I may give my first name but not last name. I may not give out what street that I live on.. I hate to lie that is why I am very honest even when it comes to total strangers.. But in my real life, the one that is outside from myLot, I am very private to peopleI don't know.. I am like that here too.. But just a little bit more lenient.

Cautious without lying. That's understandable when it comes to online, and even offline it doesn't hurt to be cautious, you never know who's a scammer.

Hello SomeCowgirl! Honestly, most of what I said here in mylot are all true and it's all about me. I don't even have problems giving my name if they well ask me. My love story is open here although I tried to hide my husband's identity for his own privacy. But I know the risk of trusting too much here so I am very careful.

I tend to be pretty honest online, but I still use discretion in choosing what to reveal. I won't ever reveal personal information though. It's not that I'm paranoid because of all the internet stalker stories that I hear, but because I like to keep my online and offline lives and identities separate. I tend to be more open and honest online because of the anonymous nature of the internet, and I like to keep it that way. It's unlikely that someone will track me down, follow me around, and brutally dismember me...but what can happen is that whatever I say can be used against me if somebody figures out who I am and happens to know me in real life.

I used to get addicted to chat ages ago. And used to tell almost everything about myself. Then I realized that people were just rude and not truthful, and I lost my trust to most people online. Generally these days, if I get to talk to people and strangers online, I say few things about myself, the typical ones, my real name, age, and my country. Before getting any further I get to know the person first, then maybe later on I could tell more about myself. It just hard to trust people online these days. But people on myLot so far are so nice.. So it's cool!

I used to chat a lot as well, and would divulge things I know I shouldn't. Then I started lying and was not able to keep up with the lies, I guess I was immature. I don't divulge unless I feel that it's okay to, so I understand you getting to know people. Yes people here are so nice!
I appreciate the response.

I think that I am very honest and it doesn't bother me that some people know my name - or they know my Christian name but not my surname. It really doesn't bother me at all. some use my name in public discussions and that is fine with me. It is not like someone is going to steal my identity is it? I think that it is all about the person who is posting. Some People are private about their lives and others need to vent so we learn more about their feelings and character. Mylot is a lifesaver for many people who are lonely or bored or feel unhappy. A friend her can make their day by just giving them support and kindness. An excellent post. Blessings

An excellent response. I hadn't thought about those people who do share more because they are needing advice. I enjoy reading what they have to say and try to put in my word! Appreciate the response!

well to say honest online means as far as i know every one will be honest online because he docent need to prove any thing and well he or she will not be facing any one and if he asks any type of questions which he is in doubt he will be getting reply , where as facing the person directly and asking is diffrent from asking online so well here online every one will be honest.

There are two different ways to say honesty, and I think that when it comes to online you can be honest without saying your name and age.

When I am online I am honest with things I write and share. It doesn't mean I put myself on a plate for everyone to see my real me. But keeping things in silence doesn't mean I am not honest. Telling your real name or not, it doesn't show your honesty really. We don't have to uncover our lives here on the net, but we can be honest in our thoughts, opinions and discussions at least, can't we?!

I am pretty honest when it come to what goes on online, expect for very personal information, like never give out last name, address, phone number, and so on. I don't understand why people think that's ok. I have met some very great friends on here, and later met them in real life and then we've exchanged information, but until I know that it's something that's gonna work, then nah, I keep that all to myself. I do it for the safety of my family as well as myself.

Personal information like that should be kept secret until you've met the person in person or unless you know someone who knows the person, then I think it'd be acceptable. I appreciate the response.

As honest as i am in reality. I don't distinguish people by his sources, internet or soundings. to me, it doesn't make any sense because you are what you are. i hate to lie and hate people lying to me, so if i really don't want to answer, i would rather shut my mouth or shun it. When i refuse to respond, that means "don't force me to lie."

I know what you mean about trying to keep up with lies. Lol, that makes me sound like I do lie, but no I don't. I'm really referring to when I was younger and did so to hide my identity online.
It's a good thing to be honest, and you can be honest and still withhold information.

I am honest and open but cautious.
I talk about me and those close to me without, I hope, putting info which could be used by anyone with the wrong intent. I rarely use anyone's name, except my own first name, and talk about 'my son' or 'my friend' thus cloaking so as not to harm the persons' involved.
So far so good (fingers crossed for the future )

I hope it is the safest too. I don't want to be too open but, especially among friends like here, it is impossible to be distant. After two years of reading and talking to the same friends it is impossible not to let out bits of myself but I hope it's never too much.
Have a greta weekend!

I am honest in mylot as well as iin any other place as I dont lie. I dont want to lie as we lie we have to see more lie in that discussion or any other matter to hide the truth, if some thing goes wrong we are caught and it is a shame that we have lied it. so better be honest and we dont have to search for the next what to say to hide one lie. Happy mylotting.

I agree that lying can cause more lying and then it's possible that the person lying can get so caught up in the lies that they don't know what they've said to one person that they hadn't said to another!

I used to be very cautious before and used to have a lot of accounts (well I still do) and use different names on the internet. I have also used the name nom-de-net on one of the sites lol. My current name in mylot is almost my real name so I think I have gotten to be more open. As far as financial information goes, its a clear no-no for me unless the site offers to protect my confidentiality and is trustworthy.

I agree, I don't like even sharing my address. I'll admit I was more open, but if it's a money opportunity and I have to put an address, no can do!
I'm not quite sure if I've ever had usernames close to my name, I know I've had email addresses close to it, and have emailed people and kept my real name attached, but ofcourse if you have my email I have to trust you.
I appreciate the response.
