No Power, No Internet

Yesterday we had high winds gusting to about 50-60 MPH. Trees and large branches were coming down all around us here and I was just hoping that we would not lose power. As I was home all day and on my computer the lights were flickering and twice the internet and phone cut off but came right back on. I was actually on Mylot starting a new discussion when for the third and final time we lost it all, power, internet and phone. I had also just put a load of laundry in the washer, which stopped in it's 1st cycle. It was around 2:30 in the afternoon and there was not much to be done. I got bored real fast, it is amazing what happens when we lose all power now a days.
I could have cooked dinner on the grill since it is still out, I use it all year long. I didn't want to open the refridgerator because I was not sure how long we would be without power. I got all the candles together and a few flashlights set up before it got dark. My husband came home from work early due to the power being out at his job too. He cleaned up with cold water and then we went out to eat dinner.
We all survived with no problem and have been in this situation many times in my life.
BUT, OMG! I got so bored and had nothing to do but sit quietly alone. I had read all the books in my house, the battery on my laptop didn't last too long, my house was already clean and you can only play so many games of solitare. We get used to all the gadgets and the internet that when we do not have them, we go a little crazy.
What do you do when you are all alone and do not have power? How do you handle being alone with nothing to do?

when that happens i try to read when it's still early. i don't run my cell phone's battery out because i might need to call somebody. but when it's already dark, i sleep & sleep & sleep. may be you should try it next time there is an outage there. it's pretty relaxing.

Hi Lovelyrita, I looked all over the house for something to read and could not find a thing. I have read all the books that are here and I do not have any magazines. I just can not manage to sleep during the day so a nap was out of the question. The only thing I could think off was getting out the deck of cards, but I got bored with them as well. Just sat and waited until my husband came home and when he called to say he was coming home early, I was happy. I now had someone to talk to and be with. Thanks for your response and have a great day!

oh, that must be pretty tough for you. good thing your husband came home soon, usually power outages here in our country would be caused by a storm or typhoon so it would be a bit overcast and cold and the bed really is inviting. during those times, i love to be in my jammies and just bury myself in my warm bed and fluffy pillows ( sounds soooo good right? it is. hahahaha!).

It does sound inviting to be snuggled up nice and warm in a comfortable bed. It is chilly today too, I could easily slip into bed, I am still in my jammies. Then I would not get things accomplished here on the PC or in my house. Glad to have the power back on before we went to bed last night. Have a nice day.

We had the high winds here too, our power went off a couple of times, but didn't stay off for very long either time. I used to live in Texas and lost power during many storms. When that would happen, if it was still daylight out, I'd work on one of my hobbies, or do some cleaning, or read. I can always find something to do if I don't have use of the computer, tv, etc. I really don't get bored very easily since I always have my hobby, scrapbooking to work on. Of course, can't really do that if it is dark out lol. But, I have always kept flashlights, camping lights and candles around for just such occasion.

Hi Palonghorn, We lost power here for almost 6 hours. I was in Texas many years ago and there was a terrible storm and huge hail. We lost power and was in a hotel at the time. We just hopped in the rental car and went sight seeing, I was younger and a little more foolish then. I love storms too, but just hate losing power.
Unfortunately, my hobby is sewing, which takes electricity. I suppose I should find another hobby that does not require that for the next time. I also get bored easily now a days since I have been out of work since last Oct. due to celulitis in my leg, can't seem t get rid of it.
I have a closet full of candles, a few good flashlights and 3 camping lanterns, so light was not going to e an issue here, LOL. A true camper can always survive. I just need to keep something around to keep me occupied. Thanks for your response and have a great day!
