Some of you may have read stuff I wrote about my mom and how she doesn't see well.
Tonight as we were spending time together shopping and having dinner (as a celebration for Valentines), she mentioned that a cashier had given her three dimes that felt weird. Later she used her magnifying glass to try and see what they were. She still thought they were dimes but couldn't figure out why they felt funny. So she asked a friend to stop over and take a look. It turns out they were small batteries.
I'm not sure what they're called, but they're the flat round batteries the exact size of a dime but they have a bit of writing on one side and a checkerboard type design on the other side.
I can't believe someone would cheat her out of 3 dimes.
I'm almost afraid to ask to see her wallet for fear her paper money turns out to be just that, .... paper !

My mom has macular degeneration and had cataracts. She had laser surgery a few months ago. She says it's clear but she still can't see. Now, she also has floating shadows, and halos everywhere she looks. She keeps trying to shoo them away.
I'm always worried when she goes anywhere because of the traffic.
Vision impairment is a huge loss.

Hi everyone
I can also speak from a vision impaired perspective, because I too am vision impaired.
We that are vision impaired, are a forgotten bunch. There are so many issues that folks take for granted, having good vision. Please protect your vision. It's such a blessing to have it when it is good.
Check your family history for vision problems that may be inherited, and then start doing research on vitamins and minerals and what to do to prevent that problem in 'your' life.
I know that when I was first diagnosed with (wet) macular degeneration (the worst of the 2 kinds, I found out that 3 of the main enemies of the vision, are: 1. sugar 2. hydrogenated products - and - 3.bright sunlight
Many products have on their lables the word 'Hydrogenated.'
For instance - shortening - peanut butter (except for natural) - many margarines and some oils.
I'll just share one thing that happened to me that most folks wouldn't even think about, that could have turned out as a danger to me.
Last spring, I was going to meet my best friend and my sister-in-law for lunch at my favorite resutrant here in town. It's about 10 - 12 miles from my home, and I can't drive any more. So I told the girls that I'd take the bus.
When I told the bus driver where I needed to get off, he left me off at that location. But I didn't realize till after I'd gotten off the bus, that the resturant was "on the other side" of the busy street, and I'd have to cross it hoping to make it safely. Fortunately, someone could tell I was hesitating at the curb, and offered to help me - - and fortunately, the street wasn't that busy at that time of the day. It was a scary experience. Now I am afraid to ride the bus to places that I'm not sure of.
Hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day/evening with your Valentine(s)

That is downright low if the person knowingly is passing counterfeit change. I believe that is a serious offence. If the cashier is ripping off customers they are probably ripping off the employer too. There is a chance that the change was slipped to the cashier and they were not paying attention.

it could be an honest mistake and the were just passing along what they thought was real dimes.
But what are the odds that they would pull out three fake dimes out of a drawer full of change?

I hope this doesn't happen to her (or anyone else) again.
It's mean.

it is really bad if they do take advantage over those impaired people just because they can get away with it. for whatever reason they do such things they should be reported. but sometimes out of compassion we just tend to forgive without them having being reported. but i feel bad when i hear some people taking advantage of some people even if it not that serious. but still it makes me feel bad. anyways, i think you should have checked if her paper money are still real money are just paper as you have mentioned. but i hope that they did not cheat her of paper money too. guess that it will be much difficult to cheat her with paper money if they don't have any play money available by that time or if they have to have a make one on that moment cause it takes time to cut a paper size exactly like money and paper money out of some real paper will just feel fake as it is .

I casually mentioned it but I don't want her to be very paranoid.
I guess she really should be much more careful with money but like you said, they would have to have money laying there waiting for someone (my mom) to show up and buy something, then they can give her fake money. It would be premeditated and I'd hate to think someone would go that far but realistically, it could happen I suppose.

That's a good point. Why would they have batteries just sitting there? Why would they give batteries instead of dimes?
The only thing I can think of is, they're trying to see how much they can get away with. Maybe they're setting my mom up for a greater loss.
Oh my gosh, it just dawned on me as I wrote that answer, that she could be getting setup for more loss.

That is just wrong! I cannot believe someone would this... There are some people around the world that will do anything for money and try to take advantage of people that are having problems. You should go to that person and have a little talk with him!

I believe it only because it happened to my mom but really, it seems too bizarre to be real.

Well, that is just rotten, You should take those batteries to the police maybe they can get fingers prints, and find out the store this is going on in. I know three dimes are not much, But the fact a cashier is ripping off their customers I know their employers would not be happy to hear this.
My Grandma is elderly and blind too, and people also been ripping her off they tricked her into buying all these assets she does not need, because they played on her fear of the Great depression :( ..
Alot of sicko frauds out there...
I am sorry to hear about this happening to your grandma.. You may want to walk her to the door of the store and stand at the other end of the check out secretly watching then, if it happens again you are witness and proof ask to speak to the manager and take care of it :) . - DNatureofDTrain

I'm still debating what to do about it
She can't even tell me exactly which store gave her the fake money.
It's pretty bad

That is downright disgusting but sadly, that is the problem with people dealing with those that vision impairments. They think it's OK to mess with them because they're not like everyone else and it's rather easy to pull one over on those with vision impairments. I don't agree with that practice at all. I think it's terrible and really shows just how sad our society has gotten because 30 cents? Really? Was it really worth the trouble for 30 cents?

The more I think about it, the more surreal it seems... but then I shake myself back to reality and have to face the facts that some people are that petty. It's sad.

wow thats ridiculous. i cant even stand people that are cheap like that. my bosses boss, the owner of the grocery store i work at ( im 16) is almost as cheap as that. he pays me a bit less than minimum wage... im not going as far as saying these people should be off of this earth, but they should just think about how low it is to steal money from a sight impaired senior...

Less than minimum wage is a violation of labour laws, isn't it?
People can barely make ends meet as it is without these employers pinching pennies off the workers wages. Arghhhhh, makes me want to scream!

Wow, that is something. You have to wonder about people who decide to try to cheat the disabled. Heck, we've a situation up here in MN. There is an apartment building that is completely rented by those that are disabled and it's full of roaches. The building manager said there isn't anything they can do about it! Oh, the treatment of the disabled make my blood boil sometimes.
I agree, the person who did it should be reported to the police. Who knows what else that person is skimming from their register.

I'm worried that they'll try and pass her fake bills.
She would pack them in her purse thinking they're whatever they're supposed to be and find out later that it's just pieces of paper. That makes me so angry!
There was a thing on the news not too long ago because the building was full of disabled tenants and the building was very rundown. When the media showed up with their cameras, the owner stood in the doorway and refused them entry. One of the tenants was yelling at him that she is allowed to have anyone visit her apartment -- but the reporters with their cameras still couldn't gain entry. Pretty weird stuff.
