The only "us" and "them" is US - the people - & THEM - the politicians

I just, quite unfortunately, read a couple of very hateful discussions, one from a conservative perspective and one from a liberal perspective, and I have to say that I am pretty disappointed with humanity as a whole right now. It seems that the only thing that a new president has proved was that it was not Bush who caused a divide in the American people, because I think the divide is only getting deeper. And honestly, I think the politicians are playing us against one another for whatever their twisted reasons may be. I think we need to take a step back and think about this. It is not like Obama is going to make a bunch of policies that only benefit liberals and no one else. The policies that this government passes are going to affect everyone, so it does not do anyone any good to blindly agree or disagree with him based on party lines. I think he has done some good things already. I think he has done some crummy things already. But I do know one thing - anyone who trusts him wholeheartedly is a fool. He is a politician, and like 99% of the politicians before him his interests are not the same as the interests of the American people. This is not a battle between liberals and conservatives, and it is not a battle between rich and poor (and if you listen to that load of crap, we are going to be a Communist country before you can blink). Most of the time we have no idea what the government is up to, and yet we let them talk us into complacency and give up our fundamental right as American people to govern OURSELVES. What the government does affects ALL OF US, so we should stop being stupid sheep and start taking a serious look at what the slimy politicians up on Capitol Hill are doing (other than lining their pockets with our hard earned money).

Well stated katran- I agree with you. I so hope I have heard wrong, cause I hear that there's another stimulus package with about 1,300 pages in it!! And that these stimulus packages were written up "before Obama ever won the election." Sounds like Pelosi and Reid and some others were pretty sure he'd be the one "taking over." Don't know what it'll take for Americans to wake up and unite as a people, and never mind marching under a political banner! These past 3 elections we've gone through have about made me just want to give up on voting and go live in a cave somewhere. Politicians are getting more and more into the control mode, and contacting many of them is a waste of time, cause once they're in, they'll do what they think benefits THEIR party - - "not" what the people want. They don't seem to realize that they are supposed to be working for US. I think come next election, we should get rid of a bunch of the ones that have been in for years, although a few of them have really fought for the people, and our rights. Hope you have a great Valentine's Day/evening with your sweetie.

There sure are enough nasty and downright hateful discussions and posts here, aren't there? I've found some that I've started with NO intention of it getting nasty have turned that way and I've been trying to force myself to avoid those that start out with name calling and abusive comments. Sometimes I can't help myself if something so ridiculous is said that seems to beg for a response. I wish so much we could get back to it being US, the people of the U.S., united as one nation. I don't mean we're ever going to all agree on everything, because that's never going to happen, nor should it. There will always be conservatives and liberals even if by some miracle we were to get rid of the two party system and no longer had Republicans and Democrats in charge. That's also a good thing if we can find a way to discuss and debate the issues, agree to disagree when necessary but hopefully find a middle ground at least some of the time. It will be difficult to ever get to that point as long as we have such hatred, as is evident right here on myLot, towards people simply because they support the other guy or the other party. I know I'm not a "sheep" and I've never blindly followed anyone, much less a politician and I sure don't "worship" any political leaders and I never will. Actually I see politicians as human beings just like you and I are. They're neither perfect nor evil...well, at least MOST of them aren't evil...lol! Some did start out crooked and corrupt and some became corrupt once they got the taste for power. I think most started out with good intentions and some have even managed to keep them but they ALL have made mistakes just as the rest of us have. I wish there were a way for us to have people in office who weren't career politicians. However, I think it would be even worse if we had all rich people in there taking turns. We need to find a way for an average person to get elected, someone who knows the struggles families go through today. Annie

I agree with you, Annie. I don't think the Founding Fathers ever meant for people to make a career out of being a legislator, but unfortunately our country is so big that it is hard for everyday people to run for office. Even if we were to use a lottery system like they had in ancient Greece, can people really afford to give up their jobs for two or six years in order to be a legislator? We would have to come up with some system to ensure that they would still have a job waiting for them when they got done serving or something. It seems like it is not really feasible. I really think that we at LEAST need to add term limits for congressmen though. There should not be 90-year-olds still pretending to be congressmen.
