How do you tell a person without offending him or her

Hello MyLotters, how will you tell a person if she or he has halitosis (bad breath) without offending her/ him? I had this colleague, friend of mine that when he speaks, aww you can really smell the canal coming out of his mouth. I offer him chewing gum just not to be vocal on this matter. But even if he is chewing i can still smell the awful smell. What do you think is best to do and say. I don't want to make him feel embarass.
