A few years ago, my sister feed a hamster as her pet. She spends quite a lot of money buying food, place for hamster to live and etc. But, sadly to said, hamster's life-span is very short. It just can live for a few months only. It really make my sister very sad. What is hamster's actual life-span?

Most rodents live about 3 years, but sometimes longer if they get world class care hehe. I think it is worth owning one though, if it brings joy to your life. I used to have rats as pets, and they were some of the sweetest animals that I have ever had. They were incredible smart too, they were almost like cats. People usually associate them with dirtiness, but they take great care of themselves. Too bad that they are considered pests, instead of just pets. My rats would always climb onto my shoulder and would enjoy it when I would walk with them perched up there haha. They would stay there all day if you wanted them to. I also had a leash for them, and they would enjoy nature walks. But they did not really need a leash since they would just follow me. When I was little I had a rat that was so attached to me. When I would put him in the yard he would follow me, and even if I ran he would be running behind me chasing haha. It sounds silly, but they are really great animals!

lm appreciated with both of you for the knowledge about rodents. My sister was busy with her studies at that time, so maybe because of that, she had neglected her hamster. Actually, her hamster got good treatment from her, too. She would make sure that her hamster, have enough food and drink, and also bathed him twice a week. Maybe because of lack of love, most of the time the hamster is alone. Pity him.

Actually, hamsters generally live 2-3 years. But I've known people to have them for up to 5 years.
One of the best ways to make sure your hamster is healthy is to weigh it weekly using a gram scale. If weight is lost, check for signs of illness and the hamster may possibly need veterinary attention.
