Well, you have to have a router that has a signal be able to pick up an connection. Up tp 100 feet away. And if there is no connection, then you can go to a free hot spot such as your local library, McDonald's, an cafe. Anywhere that you can get a free WiFi connection. So, some people have their WiFi connection secured. That means that you won't be able to access the Internet nearby. Places like these are motels/hotels. It will be security enabled, only they can get access to it. If you are a guest at the motel, then they may give you the access code to get on the Internet. Others ways of getting on the Internet is by dial-up and broadband cable.

depends on if you're trying to setup your new router to access someone elses access point or if your accessing your own router. and as well how well you know how to setup security on your systems.
if you really need help with this, try posting what you are attempting in more detail. such as what kind of "wi fi" you're (trying) to access, what kind of router your thinking about using, how many computers you're tyring to setup on your home network. people can advise you MUCH better if they know what you're trying to do and how you're trying to do it.... trying to read your mind slows us down considerably! =)

you can buy/purchase any router that will fits your need. If you ask me, if you need an assistance to setup your new router that will be optional. Setting up new purchase router the task is straight forward it is accompanied with installation disc and manual as nowadays manufacturer they want their product hassle free meaning "zero configuration". Zero configuration means you just insert the accompanied installation disc and properly plug the cables(UTP,POTS) and power supply then you are done something like that. Another thing is you didn't indicate your ISP service provider whether you are using 3G,WiMAX or the traditional two(2)copper wire service a.k.a.(POTS - plain old telephone service or PSTN - Public Switched Telephone Network)Broadband. Also, if you are using an existing broadband of POTS/PSTN then you must be having already the DSL Modem so you just buy the Wi-Fi/WLAN Router without ADSL modem in it. But, if you have extra money then better get the three(3) in one(1) meaning - all in one(1) device a ASDL2/+2 Modem, Wi-fi/WLAN and a Router.

might sound like a stupid question, but what kind of equipment are you using to get the Wi FI connection?? you'll need different setups for different methods of getting your signal. if you get your connection from USB or PC Card device, you'll have to use a connection sharing software and setup you're router to kno wthat you're PC w/ the device attached is the outbound side of the connection and that all others need to connect through that computer. if you have some kind of Wi Fi modem that works like a typical Cable or DSL Modem, all you need to do hook it to the WAN side of the Modem and everything will auto-setup as it should.
as far as security, all i can really add is to make VERY sure how secure your connection is. i can't stress enough how important that security is. and the more security you can implement through your router the better, because then you won't have to worry about it as much on each computer/game system/device that accesses your internet connection
