There are different kind of prayers. The mail prayers are fixed time and obligatory, its five times a day 1. Dawn (Fajr) 2. Noon (Dhuhar) 3. After noon (Asar) 4. Sunset (Magrib) 5. Night (Isha'a') The above are prayers having standing, bowing, prostrating , praising, asking, reciting words of Quran etc. Congregational prayers are on Fridays, It is done at the time of noon prayer(Dhuhar). Asking for forgiveness and help can be anytime, these are prayers too.

Offering prayers (salat is the Arabic term for prayers) is a compulsary duty for all Muslims - make and female. There are five such compulsory prayers in a day Fajr (early morning just before sunrise) Zuhr (noon) Asr (early evening) Maghrib (at time of sunset) Isha (night) The exact time depends on where you are. The Friday afternoon prayer (Jumah) that takes place in lieu of Zuhr, at the same time is accompanied by a sermon. It is compulsory for all male Muslims to attend this jumah in congregation at the mosque. For all other prayers, praying in congregation is highly recommended, but one can also pray alone if circumstances warrant. In addition to these five prayers, there are optional prayers like Duha (between Fajr and Zuhr) and Witr (after Isha, preferably during the last third of the night). There are also prayers like Taraweeah (after Isha) during the month of Ramadhan, Eid prayers and the likes. These prayers are optional - that it you will be rewarded if you offer them, but they are not compulsory - i.e. you are unlikely to be punished if you do not pray such prayers. The length of each prayer depends on how fast one performs them. The ideal length of each of the five compulsorily prayer is about 10 minutes each.

The time depends on where you are located. Fajr is always before sunrise. Thuhr/Zuhr is around noon but can be an hour before and hour after depending on the time of year it is. Asr is mid day and currently is around 3ish but moves alot later in the summer. Magrib is when the sun is compelety down, it dosen't have to be dark outside, just no sun. And isha is at night, when it is dark. I hope this helps you.
