I would recommend it. I met my wife online and we have been happily married for three years so far. Just use some common sense and caution and it can be great. Of course be honest about how you describe yourself, you interests, etc. For the first couple of dates arrange to meet in a public place and stay in public until you know and trust each other - then you can exchange addresses.

i met my husband online as well and now i live in australia isnt the internet a great way to reach across the miles to find someone when there not in your own backyard! best thing i did was meet this wonderful man havent been married as long as you have we have known each other for 3 yrs before we did the leep and its the best move i ever made!
